Part IV:
Andrew tilted his glass back, but did not drink. Theodore didn’t notice. He waited, watching and observing, with the silence and stalking of a predator, who had just realized it was not the only one on the hunt.
The evening drew on, sweeping swiftly into night and darkness. Nothing alerted his heightened senses, save for the fact that Theodore nearly constantly refilled their glasses, but mostly Andrew’s, urging him to drink. He wondered why.
“…perhaps you better stay here, tonight. You’ve had quite a lot.” Theodore smiled softly, seeming innocent.
Andrew didn’t answer. He pretended to sway as he stood. Theodore was at his side, and in an instant, he rushed him. His hands clamped down like vices around Theodore’s arms, backing him close to the wall.
Theodore gasped, surprised. He squirmed and struggled. “A-And…” He stammered.
“What are you up to, Theodore?” Andrew demanded, not the least bit drunk.
“N-Nothing…”
Andrew squeezed tighter.
“I wasn’t… ow!” Theodore winced in pain.
Andrew’s eyes narrowed, “This isn’t the first time. I know you’ve been urging me to drink all evening. And then you suggest I stay here?”
Theodore’s frightened breath was rapid and shaky, hot against Andrew’s face and lips. He didn’t answer.
“It’s the same thing you did last week, isn’t it? When I did stay here… You weren’t drunk at all. It was all a façade.” Andrew held fast. “What are you up to, Theodore?” He demanded, again, “What happened, last week? What did you do?”
“N-n-nothing… I didn’t… Ow… And’, please! I swear it… nothing happened!” Theodore’s lip began to tremble.
“So you thought you’d try it again, now, did you?” Andrew snarled.
“No!” Theodore shook his head vehemently.
“Then what, Theodore? Why are you doing this?” Andrew shook his head. His grip began to loosen, though only slightly.
Theodore stared at him. His eyes began to water. “God… And’… I’m sorry… I’m so sorry…”
“Theo…” Andrew released him. He watched in horror as Theodore crumpled, falling to a heap on his knees at his feet. “Teddy…!” The anger disappeared, replaced with concern, “Teddy, are you all right?” He dropped down beside him.
“N-no…” Theodore shook his head miserably. “I’m sorry… I’m sorry… God, And’, please… sorry… so sorry…” He babbled.
“Teddy… Hush…” Andrew commanded gently, reaching out a cautious and slow hand, laying it on his shoulder. He wordlessly took him into his arms when Theodore started to cry. He leaned back and rested his back against the wall, cradling Theodore against his body like a scared child. “Hush…” He murmured.
Theodore trembled against him. He clutched the folds of Andrew’s shirt like a lifeline.
Andrew could feel the wetness of Theodore’s tears soaking through to his chest. He began to rock him gently, back and forth, in his arms.
Theodore’s heart beat wildly against his ribs. He held tighter to Andrew, pressing himself hard against the firm, toned body and Andrew began to gently stroke his hair.
“Teddy,” Andrew began, in a soft and quiet voice, as not to scare him further, “I didn’t mean to frighten you.” He whispered. “I’m sorry, if I hurt you…”
Theodore squeezed his eyes shut. “…So sorry…” He muttered, shaking his head.
“What are you sorry about, Teddy?” Andrew asked, gently. “What’s happened?”
“I… got you… drunk… I didn’t…” The words were jumbled, lost together in their own mess of a sea.
“Why?”
Theodore swallowed.
“Why did you do it?” Andrew asked again. “If you say nothing happened, I believe you.”
Theodore choked back a sob, making a hacking noise.
Andrew clucked his tongue, bringing his hand to rest on Theodore’s back, applying warm, firm pressure.
“It’s so cold, sometimes.”
Andrew frowned. Theodore felt cool against him, though not overly so. He hadn’t noticed any signs of sickness. He didn’t appear to have been sleeping well, perhaps that was part of it.
“…It hurts.”
“Are you feeling all right? Shall I fetch the surgeon, to have a look at you?” Andrew offered.
Theodore shook his head against him.
Andrew continued to frown. “Is that why you’ve not been sleeping? You’re uncomfortable?”
“My footsteps echo.” Theodore said, sadly.
Andrew tilted his head.
Theodore swallowed again, sniffing. “It’s so quiet… there’s nothing else, but me. My footsteps echo. It’s so loud, when it does… But… but it’s so quiet.”
“Oh, Teddy.” Andrew rubbed his back.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be, Teddy…” Andrew shook his head. He touched Theodore’s cheek. “I understand.” He assured him. “You’re lonely.”
“I…” Theodore opened his mouth. He nodded.
