Part II:
James shifted and opened his eyes, feeling the warmth of the sunlight bathe over his naked skin. He raised his head, and propped himself up on an elbow, seeing that Theodore was already awake.
Theodore looked at him, eyes darker than usual, his face still.
James’s brow furrowed, and his green eyes filled with silent concern for his lover.
Theodore bit his lip. “He left.”
James looked around the bed, and the room. The door was shut and latched. Andrew’s clothes were gone from the floor, where they had landed the night before.
Theodore laid his head back down on his pillow, obviously thinking hard.

Andrew jumped at the voice behind him. He whirled around. He let out a sigh of relief.
“Who did you expect, Andrew?” Theodore said again, quietly. His eyes were tired, and his voice slightly groggy.
James turned to him and murmured something Andrew couldn’t hear. He gave Theodore a small smile, reaching up and touching his cheek.
Theodore nodded, returning with a slight hint of a smile himself. He shuffled to the table and sat down heavily.
James set about moving through the kitchen, pulling down three cups and starting some water to boil. When he was finished, he turned to Andrew and said, “Teddy’s not really a morning person… Needs at least one cup of coffee to start him up, again.”
Andrew nodded. He remembered vaguely from when they had shared quarters as boys, and for a while after they’d both made the rank of Lieutenant. It wasn’t long after that when James had invited Theodore to move in with him. The new salary had given Andrew the freedom to move as well, to a bigger set of rooms in a better area of town.
Theodore accepted the steaming cup from James gratefully and cradled it between his hands. His shoulders were hunched slightly forward as he sipped quietly.
“Thank you.” Andrew smiled quickly when James offered. He gazed down at the dark liquid, as James poured himself a cup and sat down next to Theodore.
They sat in strange silence for a time.
Andrew watched his two friends. James always had a soft smile upon his lips when he gazed at Theodore. He reached out and touched his arm, drawing his attention. He would run his finger down the length of his hand, caressing his fingertips in a sort of absentminded laziness that Andrew had never seen in him, before.
While James seemed not to notice that Andrew was watching them, Theodore eyes flickered towards him. His cheeks were slowly tinted with a faint pink rose color.
Andrew drew in a breath, shoulders rising and falling back down, slowly. He didn’t open his mouth to speak. He didn’t know what to say.
“You didn’t leave.” Theodore said, finally, in a quiet and meek voice.
Andrew’s heart tensed at the uncharacteristic tone of Theodore’s voice. “I wouldn’t do that, to you…” He shook his head. He realized how he sounded, and corrected quickly: “I wouldn’t leave you both, I mean.”
“Andrew…” James began softly.
“Yes?”
James hesitated, eyes drifting to Theodore for a moment, before moving back to Andrew across the table. “About, last night…”
Theodore licked his lip slowly, and looked Andrew in the eyes, “Would you… like to come up?”
“We’ve… been thinking about it, for a long time, now.” James said, finally.
Andrew’s back stiffened. His eyes narrowed unconsciously.
Theodore reached forward and took James’s hand.
James squeezed reassuringly. “It wasn’t just sudden lust, last night.” He continued.
Andrew scoffed, “What was it, then, James? Because it looked like that, to me.”
Theodore inhaled sharply. His eyes showed the first hints of beginning to glisten, and grew a shade darker.
James squeezed his hand again. He glared at Andrew, but only for a moment, instead turning his attention to Theodore. He leaned forward and murmured something into his ear.
Theodore shook his head. He looked sadly down into his half-empty cup, tilting it to one side, then the other.
“Surely you know us better than that, Andrew.” James said, in a biting tone, “Would we honestly seduce you, for the hell of it?”
“After last night I’m not sure I know what you would or would not do. Or what lengths you would go to, to get what you desire at any given moment.” Andrew pressed his lips together firmly.
“Stop it!” Theodore looked back up at him. “Stop it…”
Andrew sighed, hand falling limply down to the tabletop with a dulled thud. “I don’t take kindly to being used.”
“That’s enough!” James boomed.
Andrew’s shoulders straightened and his eyes focused straight ahead, the Lieutenant in him reacting to a strict order from his Commodore.
“That’s quite enough, Andrew.” James said, again, through clenched teeth.
“Andrew… it wasn’t… we didn’t… We never wanted…” Theodore stumbled, shaking his head. He clenched James’s hand like a lifeline in stormy seas.
“Is that honestly what you think happened?” James asked, after a long moment, his voice softening.
Andrew didn’t answer. He didn’t feel that way. He was conflicted, unsure of himself, of his feelings. He had rarely felt this way. He hated it, and it put him on the defensive.
“You two have been lovers, for so long now…” He trailed off, shaking his head. He never finished his sentence.
“Why would I invite you to come up if I didn’t want you there, And’?” Theodore was deathly quiet, lips remaining slightly parted as his breathing hitched in his throat.
Andrew looked at him, eyes holding on Theodore’s. They were dark and unreadable, though he tried. He turned his gaze to James, who turned away, instead focusing his attentions on Theodore.
James slowly brought Theodore’s hand to his lips, caressing it between each of his. He kissed it tenderly, and held it to his cheek.
Andrew closed his eyes for a moment. His voice was soft and low when he spoke, again: “I wouldn’t have accepted, if I didn’t want to be there.”
