I was supposed to do it for class but I thought I'd post some of it here fore fun.

1. Where did you grow up? Would you describe your childhood home as working-class, middle-class or upper class?

I was born in Council Bluffs, IA but have spent all but those very early years in Wisconsin--Milwaukee and Madison. I'd describe my family as middle-class.

2. If you know, what were your GREAT-grandparents schooling and occupations?

On my Maternalside: We were chiefly land-owning farmers I believe, my great-grandfather owned a local trucking company.

Paternal: By the time the immigrated to the United States I'm sure my great-grandfater's had Cheder (Hebrew School) but I don't know how much 'higher education' they had. I know that somewhere in there they owned a shop.

3. If you know, what were your Grandparents schooling and education?

Maternal: Grandfather had to leave school at sixteen to work on the farm. He was very bright and learned on his own, eventually becoming a Corporal in the Army air. After the war he worked in a coal mine and had a farm.  My Grandmother finished High School, worked at home on the farm and was a Sunday School teacher.

Paternal: Grandfater was a Chemist (B.S. and/(?)M.S) from UW-Madison, he worked for the City of Milwaukee. My Grandmother went to Teaching College, taught and was a housewife.

4. What were your parents schooling and occupations?

My father had a BA from UW-Madison and worked mainly in Broadcasting before his retirement. He was a radio station manager for most of my life.

My mother has a B.S. in Nursing and enough credits for a Masters, just not the thesis. I dropped into this work six weeks early and put an end to that plan. She has worked as an R.N. in many different places.

5. What have been your own schooling and occupation so far?

B.A from UW-Madison (third generation if anyone is counting). I've worked tutoring in Hebrew for three years, was an assistant at Religious School for two and have worked at Memorial Library for about four years now.

6. What is your earliest memory of seeing someone read?

As long as I can remember people read to me or I saw someone read.

7. What is your earliest memory of reading or writing yourself?

One day, age three, I simply picked up the book my parents read to me everynight at my request and put two and two together. I memorized it, picked out the words and figured it out.

8. What is your earliest memory of someone teaching you to read or write?

Actually, I dont't remember anyone teaching me to read in English, I picked that up on my own. I remember them teaching me to read in French in first grade at the Immersion school. I remember I was in the "Pommme" (apple) group and all my friends were the "Cerises" (cherry)..

More later.

Anyway, for our Grant writing project instead of making up stuff just for the project that won't do any real good, another student (a nice [very cute] Jewish boy!) asked me (!) to be in a group that is going to write a grant for a Jewish library that needs new book shelves. So I'm going to do something that's actually useful for school. I love it.

Law and Order SVU's first show of the season is on tonight. For a day that was so blah, this evening has been fantastic!
