So, there I was at my friendly public library, looking through the DVD section. And what do I find, but PBS for the home!
I was very excited, because channel 5 comes in clearly not at all--what I am stuck with is ABC on 20. Can we say Ugly Betty, Grey's Anatomy, Wipeout and other mind rot? Thought we could. Normally I avoid this by just turning/leaving it off, but some days it says "just sit and watch....I'll mind your brain for you" and I listen. Very scary, let me tell you. Okay, okay....Grey's is usually pretty good.
Anyway, I picked up "The Cheese Nun" and one of Jean-Michel Costueau's underwater adventures. I thoroughly enjoyed both. I have been experimenting with making yogurt at home (do you know that all those yogurt containers are #5 plastic? its not recyclable!) and am thinking of moving onto soft cheeses. The kind you don't have to buy rennet to make. I know it is just an enzyme, and its in many of my favorite foods, but its a barrier, because they sure don't sell it at the grocery store! The ocean one was about sharks, and then grey whales. It amuses me that one of the largest denizens of the ocean lives off of teeny tiny little creepy crawleys. And that the biggest danger to humans from sharks maybe the level of mercury in their flesh. A cynical part of my says 'serves people right to die from mercury poisoning when the shark is killed (to the tune of 100 million a year) just for the fin to make soup from.' Some of the shark populations are very slow reproducing.
I should now get back to work. Just thought I would share my adventures in public broadcasting. Your tax dollars at work!
