So I got the official, "You can't wear a tie to work anymore" talk today. The director of human resources came into the store on Thursday and apparently ripped my supervisor a new asshole for letting me "get away with" having worn a tie for the last 4 years. Apparently it is in the policy that "women" have to wear either 1)a broach 2)a scarf, or 3)netting?. I don't even know what the hell netting is. I don't think the handbook technically says that women CAN'T wear men's ties...it just outlines what is appropriate. I don't know...it's a touchy situation. I'm off work on Tuesday, but I'm going to look it up myself when I go back on Wednesday. I know for a fact that I looked it up one time (however it has been about 2-3 years), and it said that "women" could wear men's ties.
I guess my biggest argument is...I have had about 6 different supervisors and 3 different directors of operation since I've been in Indy, and not one of those 9 people EVER said one word about the fact that I wear a tie. This is the first time it has ever been an issue.
I told my supervisor that I needed to think about whether or not I was willing to compromise. It's not that I AM willing to compromise, but I wanted to buy some time to check into it myself. I don't know if legally I have any ground here...and it certainly wouldn't look good for a newly promoted GM to raise a fuss about an issue right off the bat, but I will stick with my principles regardless. My supervisor says I shouldn't say it's a matter of principle. I don't know what that means.
I would hate to have to quit this job over something so stupid. But, at this point, I would. I hinted to my supervisor that that might be a possibility, but I was VERY careful not to threaten or be adamant about it. It was just a vague suggestion.
Shit like this totally pisses me off. If I hear one more person in the upper management come into my store and talk about "the perception" I give to people, I might just throw some hot fries on them.
That's it. This is NOT a good time for them to come at me with crap like this. Homophobic assholes.
