Prompt 50.3 Have your character describe the same event to two different people - think about how what they say differs between each person
Two people sat inside Jack’s office, the day after it all happened. Jack watched Tosh, not saying anything.
“So what happened, Toshiko?” he asked eventually, but gently.
Toshiko shrugged, unwilling to tell him the truth, but knowing he would work it out of her eventually. Just by that way he had of looking at you, making you feel at ease.
“She found me at a low point,” she said, continuing to look down at the ground. “You know what this job is like at times. I… just needed someone to talk to, someone to understand. I thought I’d found it, but she was using me.” This was said with bitterness. Jack sat silently, waiting for her to continue. “Just another disaster in the life of Toshiko Sato,” she said, not looking at him.
Jack sat down next to her. “Tosh. If your life was that much of a disaster, you wouldn’t be working here for me.” She looked at him for a moment, then down again.
“It feels like it at times.”
“I’d say go home, get some rest, but I know you won’t.”
“I need to be doing something useful.”
“UNIT figures then, Tosh,” Jack said with a smile. “I expect them on my desk by the end of the day.”
Tosh left Jack’s office, heading back to her own station. She was aware Owen was at his station, watching her the whole way. She ignored him and started working.
“So, what the bloody hell happened, Tosh?” Owen asked after a couple of moments of silence. “I mean, you couldn’t tell it was a flipping alien? And what was with that reading the mind?”
Tosh closed her eyes for a moment, fighting down the irritation she felt at his questions. “No, Owen, I couldn’t tell it was an alien. And the rest? We talked about this last night.” When I realised just how you felt about me. “I said then it wasn’t my business, and nothing has changed.” In more ways than one.
Owen looked at her for a moment, then nodded once, and stalked off towards the autopsy room. Tosh slumped in her chair, drained at both the conversations. How the hell did this happen would be a question she asked herself for quite some time.
