“You know, some people say you shouldn’t be allowed to wear green,” Kelsey says, her deep blue eyes twinkling. I know she doesn’t care about unspoken customs, or about my no soul status. Some say I shouldn’t be allowed a green dress, as green is one of the colors of the Church. The forbidden Church ( Read more... )

They might actually want to execute her, which could lead to Jocelyn (who works at Harmony) and Gemma somehow getting Gemma a "last request" to see Kai. Or possibly the same place they hold troublemakers at the facility is where Kai is, and Gemma, with her weird...whatever is going on with her, is able to pick the lock on her cell and find Kai down the hallway.

The lock-picking wouldn't be magical or directly related -- she just...has a bobby pin stuck in her hair from her wig, or one fell into her bra or something. If you ripped a wig off your head, do you think some bobby pins would remain in your hair? She might have just taken to carry bobby pins or similar in her bra because I imagine she learned to pick locks from one of her fellow Harmony residents. The reason her soul (or lack thereof) would matter is they put up a magic barrier around her cell specifically to prevent anyone from escaping...and, having no soul, she's able to walk right through it.

I had the wild idea that she encounters a security guard and steals his gun by straight up tackling him and when he tries to chase her, shoots him in the knee. The reason she has such good aim? "I knew I wouldn't be able to aim well since I never shot a gun before, so I deliberately aimed badly and just hoped that would let me hit something." Maybe she hits the guard in the shoulder or thigh or somewhere that you wouldn't THINK is deadly but finds out later the guard died because seemingly non-fatal wounds can actually kill you? Ouch, but it could happen. I DID once say Gemma would be among the cast members more like to kill someone!

When I wrote this, I had a similar reaction to Gemma's little speech. On one level, it WAS kind of badass and she had good points. On the OTHER hand, yeah...she's gonna be in trouble! Gemma doesn't have the best impulse control. Even earlier in the story, she pushes someone down a bunch of bleachers for hitting on her, heh.
