I'm glad you enjoyed the date joke -- I sometimes can't resist humor like that. That's also why Wren came up with one of the worst "we have to leave now" excuses ever -- though the worst excuse for something I can remember was the girl who said she couldn't dance with a guy at a middle school dance because "her earlobe hurt." According to one of my high school best friends, that actually happened.
Part of this scene was kind of based on my own high school experience. While I, unlike some people, never had anyone look at me too weirdly for not wanting to ogle boys, I definitely didn't see the point of doing that when I was a teenager.
I never pushed anyone down the bleachers for hitting on me, but I HAVE given more than one street harasser the finger. The funniest (in a black comedy sort of way) incidence of that was when one of the two harassers called me "disrespectful." The hypocrisy was astounding enough to darkly amuse me. I'm thinking like "are you serious?"
