The small Exploration Team had been on-planet for a week now, and every day they were there, Kalista Langley hear the laughter. When she should have been documenting plant samples, she heard the laughter. When she should have been sleeping she heard it, for it even invaded her dreams. Dammit, she thought to herself. I'm cracking up. Kalista had asked about the strange laughter the second night they were there, and Captain Dennis Hart had laughed and made a joke about women not being suited to space exploration. Kalista had just smiled. She was used to Hart by now, but she didn't dare bring it up with the other two. Micah Jeffries and Janis Ellery were no better.
On the eighth day, Kalista knew she had to do something because she hadn't slept at all. Saying nothing to her crewmates, she suited up in a specially designed Environment Protection Suit, or EPS. The dark grey, skintight-yet-impossibly-strong material was meant for hiking through dangerous terrain, and Kalista meant to travel the Rocky Forest, a strange landscape of improbably huge trees that seemed to sprout from the rocks themselves. It was nothing but the same kind of tree over and over, all white bark and huge circular leaves. The ground was strange crumbling stone that could easily trip you and slice your unprotected skin to bits. Her team had decided the Rocky Forest was too “treacherous” for exploration. Kalista didn't care; she knew if she traversed the landscape she would find the source of the seemingly everlasting laughter.
After filling her pack with necessary supplies, Kalista set off. The sun of this world beat down on her; she was thankful for the anti-glare faceplate on her EPS. Even walking along the ground was slow going, but, was it her imagination, or did the laughter grow louder?
“I wondered when you would finally come and see me.”
Kalista paused. “Who's there?” She shouted, heart pounding.
Something struck her as decidedly odd; the voice spoke in her native language, when there was no reason for an alien to do so. Was she really just cracking up?
The strange voice answered, “Someone who needs your help.”
What kind of alien would need her help? Kalista mumbled to herself, “I'm definitely cracking up.”
The alien replied, “My apologies. You're not 'cracking up,' as you call it.”
“Then show yourself!”
The air in front of Kalista shimmered. She stared, stunned, as a figure materialized before her. A human figure. This impossible being seemed to sense her confusion, because he told her, “I chose a form you would understand.” The figure was decidedly male and, Kalista couldn't help noticing, unbelievably beautiful.
“Definitely cracking up,” she said.
The figure smiled. “You still don't believe I'm real, do you?”
Kalista took a deep breath. If she calmly explained to her hallucination why he didn't exist, he would disappear and she would stop feeling crazy. Though, he was awfully pretty. Maybe she should let him stick around. No, she decided. It's best to make him go away. Kalista lifted her faceplate up so she could be better heard. “Sir, you can't exist because for one thing, you're speaking my language on your planet, and you look human when evolution says that's highly unlikely. And for another, you're far too good-looking to be real.”
The hallucination really was too good-looking to be real, with piercing blue eyes, shining dark hair and a tall, toned body.
He kept smiling. And existing. “I assure you, I am real, though it's understandable you might not think so at first. Let me prove it.”
She was extremely skeptical of this. “Okay then, prove it.”
The hallucination reached towards her and lightly touched her cheek. Kalista's heart skipped a beat and her face flushed with a strange yet pleasing warmth. Well, that wasn't imaginary. He dropped his hand and Kalista stammered, “Wh-what the?”
“Is that proof enough for you?”
She gazed directly at him, trying to steady her heartbeat. “Not without some explanation of how you exist. You may feel real, but how exactly are you even possible?”
He looked almost sad as he answered. “I'm a product of ancient technology far beyond your comprehension. How can I speak your language? My creators had the means to assure I could speak almost any language possible. They designed me so I could also take the form of any species I met, in order to be better able to communicate and complete my mission.”
“And what mission is that?” Kalista wondered.
The figure sighed. “To relay the story of my people, now long gone. I suppose you could say I'm the last of my kind and now even I am dying. I was designed to be immortal, but all things must come to an end, I suppose.”
“I'm sorry.” She wasn't sure what else she could say. Her limited protocol training hadn't prepared her for this. She did remember one thing, though. “What is your name?”
“It is alright. I have accepted my fate. And you may call me Zau. What is your name?”
Kalista replied, “I'm Kalista. So you want to tell me about your people? Is that what the laughter was about, calling me here so you could tell your story?”
Zau nodded. “I can call people from afar, but...my programming has deteriorated to the point where not everyone can hear me from a distance, and I cannot travel anymore.”
She removed her pack, and began going through it to find the Data Recorder. “I have something to record data in here; let me find it.”
The alien shook his head. “I don't need a data recording device to transmit the information. I can download it into your mind. To truly understand my people, their society, their lives must be experienced more directly.”
Kalista's face showed obvious disbelief.
Zau continued, smirking just a little. “If I can appear like this, I don't think brain downloads are too farfetched.”
She had to agree with this. If he could speak her language and appear in such a pleasing form, downloading an entire society didn't seem too out of the question. “So, Zau, how does it work? Are you just going to think your civilization at me?”
He said, “To get the full experience, there needs to be physical contact.”
Kalista blushed, because she secretly liked the idea of physical contact. “You mean like what you did before when you touched my cheek?”
There was a small pause before Zau spoke. “Like that, though, the more physical contact there is, the better the download works.”
Hesitating for a moment herself, Kalista asked, “You mean, it works better if we do something like kiss?”
Zau agreed. “Yes, things like that. If you are okay with it, of course.”
Kalista blushed again. “I am definitely okay with it.”
He smiled and leaned towards her. Kalista went to meet him, and their lips locked. He was taller than she was, so she almost had to stand on her toes. She didn't mind, being too distracted by the warmth that flooded her body. Her lips parted eagerly, letting her tongue meet his. Kalista had no more doubts about how real Zau was, as she wrapped her arms around him and pulled him closer to her. He followed her lead, embracing her.
Feeling like she was floating, Kalista ran her hand up and down Zau's back. He felt so solid and just amazing. As well as floating, she then sensed something else, a tingling at the back of her mind. What is that? she wondered. Kalista pulled slightly away from Zau, a question written on her face. She didn't let go of him entirely, not wanting to stop touching him.
Zau understood immediately why Kalista had pulled away. “That's the download beginning. I'm sorry if it's disconcerting. The best way to deal with the sensation is to remain as distracted as possible.”
Kalista knew exactly how she wanted to be distracted. She leaned in and kissed him again, this time running a hand through his silky hair. Zau couldn't follow that lead, as Kalista's hair was covered by her Environment Protection Suit. He instead ran his fingers alone her spine, causing Kalista to shiver delightfully. The EPS was a serious problem, though; Kalista wanted it off but they couldn't exactly be naked in the Rocky Forest. Right?
This time Zau pulled away first. He didn't let go of her completely, just as she hadn't let go of him. He looked at her. He was thinking the same thing she was. “I want more, but it is dangerous for you to be unprotected in this forest.”
Her face fell in disappointment. Zau spoke again, “Not to worry, there are ways around that. I can create a bubble to surround us, one that floats a few feet above the rocky terrain. It should be safe enough for us to enjoy ourselves inside it.”
Kalista brightened. “That would be amazing.” Anything that let her have Zau would be amazing.
He pulled away from her completely, and Kalista felt oddly adrift not being in contact with him. The tingling senation in her mind had stopped, too. Zau closed his eyes in concentration, and soon the two of them were floating above the ground. Kalista gasped. Slowly, a translucent bubbled formed around them, looking much like a gigantic version of the soap bubbles Kalista had seen people blow at weddings.
“Wow,” Kalista breathed. She stopped floating, falling gently to sit at the bottom of Zau's creation.
Zau opened his eyes. “You like it?”
“Very much.”
He looked directly into her eyes. Kalista's heart skipped a beat as he told her “Thank you.”
Kalista wasn't one to waste time. “I think I'm ready to get out of this suit, if you don't mind.”
Zau grinned. “I don't mind at all.”
She started removing the skintight suit. First, she pulled off the part covering her head, revealing her long strawberry blonde waves. Zau looked at her in amazement. She teased, “If you think that's impressive” as she unzipped the front, revealing her small but perfectly round breasts. Kalista pulled down the suit so her entire top half was bare.
Zau was definitely impressed, saying “You are mesmerizing.”
Kalista laughed while her body flushed at the compliment. “They feel even better than they look.”
He reached for her, running one hand lightly along her left side. The tingling sensation returned to the back of Kalista's mind. She could feel Zau's civilization downloading into her brain, but it didn't bother her at all as he squeezed her breast gently. He looked almost hypnotized. “Wow” was all he managed to say as he moved his hand across her chest, sending shivers through Kalista's body.
Zau reached out with his other hand. Now, both of his hands stroked her, moving around from her chest to her back, seemingly everywhere at once.
“Oh,” she moaned.
“You like?” he asked.
“Obviously,” she replied. “Now how about you take off your shirt so I can feel you?”
He didn't even stop touching her as his shirt shimmered and just disappeared. Kalista stared at him, stunned, both because of his vanishing shirt and how beautiful he looked without it.
“How did you do that?”
Zau laughed. “My technology has a variety of applications.”
Kalista laughed, too. “I'll say!”
Now it was her turn to reach for him. She mimicked his stroking of her body, slowly feeling the contours of his chest. His face displayed an expression of delight. Soon, it was too much for Kalista and she pushed Zau over, landing on top. She could see the rocky ground distorted through the bubble where they floated. “This okay?” she asked.
“It is.”
Kalista kissed him fiercely, wanting so desperately to be ever closer to him. Zau kissed her back with wild enthusiasm. Her body nearly convulsed with the pleasure of it. She moved to kissing his neck, her lips brushing across his skin as he sighed with satisfaction. Kalista's mouth then traveled along his chest; she could feel how much he enjoyed it. Stopping for a moment, she asked, “Can you do that magic clothing removal thing for your lower half? I want to see all of you.”
“Absolutely.”
His legs shimmered. After a second, Zau was entirely naked and definitely aroused. She had to stop for a moment just to look at him, taking in every inch of his fabulous physique.
She grinned lasciviously. “I have something I can do for you.”
Zau was visibly intrigued. “And what would that be?”
“Let me show you.”
He nodded “Okay.”
Kalista leaned over and slowly took him into her mouth. First, she licked his tip, tongue darting back and forth. Zau's breathing sped up a little as she went deeper, feeling his shaft with her lips. He gasped a little as she moved up and down. Kalista herself experienced shudders of pleasure as she noticed how much Zau was enjoying himself. She continued to glide her lips along him as she felt him pulse inside her. The pulsing increased in intensity until he released, going limp with a small moan of satisfaction. As he slid out of Kalista, she swallowed and smiled at him. “Did you enjoy that?”
He answered, “Very much. Anything I can do for you?”
She stood up and slowly removed the rest of her Environment Protection suit. Now, she wore nothing more than her white cotton panties. As those came off, she said, “All I want is you inside me.”
Zau stood up as well. He touched himself, which quickly made him hard again. He replied, “I can do that.”
Kalista leaned against the side of the bubble. She touched herself as well, saying “I need you.”
“I need you, too.” He let go of himself and grabbed both of Kalista's wrists, pinning them to her sides. Slowly, he entered her. Kalista's whole body flushed as he did. She kissed his neck. As he thrust, Kalista felt something building inside her, a wonderful tenseness that begged for release. She thought she might burst as Zau's pace increased, her back arching from all the sensation. After thinking she couldn't possibly take any more, a wave of delight shook her entire body. Zau shook in much the same way. Now limp, the two separated, Kalista sliding down the bubble and Zau sinking to his knees. He turned to lean against the bubble himself and smiled at Kalista.
She smiled back and leaned against him. He put an arm around her. Kalista hadn't even thought about the tingling in her mind from the download while they had been occupied. She did notice, however, that it had stopped.
“How do you feel?” Zau asked her.
“Amazing. And I think the download's done.”
Zau smiled. “It should be. The intensity of our activity would have speeded the process. You should be able to access the information in a few moments.”
Kalista returned his smile. “I look forward to that. I want to learn about your people. They must really be something if they created a person as incredible as you.”
