The rain began to fall during her second cigarette.
And she knew it was time to call it a night.
But her feet wouldn't take her to bed.
So she sat outside on the cold concrete, with her back against the brick of her building.
Tonight she had tried to say so much.
But for some reasons the words wouldn't come.
She wanted to tell him she loved him.
She wanted to tell him everything.
About the few years she had loved him.
Even though he was with someone else.
She wanted to tell him, that it had been her dream to kiss him.
To sleep with him next to her.
But instead, she drank her beer.
And made small talk over pizza.
And pretended that they were the best of friends.
He was driving home after their night.
Watching rain drops fall on his windshield.
He wanted to tell her everything and couldn't.
Their friendship was so fragile now.
With the insanity going on around them.
Could they make it work?
Did she even want him?
Was he imagining those sparks from her fingertips to his heart?
Or the way she looked at him, when they were alone?
Immediately, it hit him.
He had to try.
His foot grazed the brake in a brief moment of questioning.
Then it hit it with full force.
Pulling an illegal u-turn, he turned around and headed back to her.
He had to know...
Her cell phone went off on her night stand.
She had just gotten back from brushing her teeth.
She picked up the phone and looked at the name on its screen.
"Are you okay?" She asked.
"Yeah...let me in."
"Are you sure you're..."
"I'm fine. Let me in."
"Okay."
She grabbed her keys and went out the door to let him into the building.
They walked in a rushed silence to her room.
"Are you okay? What's this about?"
He walked over to her and placed his hands on the sides of her face.
He was about an inch away.
"I'm going to do something. If you don't like it, tell me and I'll leave."
She shook her nodded, trusting him.
Thinking to herself, "Oh God. This is it."
He leaned in and grazed his lips against hers.
The room began to spin.
For moments, they just stood there.
Lip to lip.
Tongue to tongue.
Quite possibly, it was the best kiss each of them had ever experienced.
And when it ended, she felt herself floating.
He opened his eyes, feeling slightly awkward about what he just done.
Really...what they had just done.
"Umm..." He began scratching the back of his head with his left hand.
"What was that?" She asked.
Immediately his face flooded with panic.
Shit...
Fuck...
Shit...
He had kissed his friend...one of his best...
What if it didn't work out?
"I'm sorry." He whispered.
"I'm going to go."
He turn.
He ran.
Wait...what just happened?
She pieced the puzzle together.
Pizza and beer.
Lonely cigarettes.
Weird phone call.
Kissing.
Spinning.
Running?
What the fuck?
He wasn't running from this.
She ran.
Barefoot.
Pajamas.
That girl ran.
She ran out the door.
It was raining harder now.
She saw him speed walking to his car.
"HEY! HEY! What are you doing?"
He ignored her.
She ran some more.
"What are you doing?" She said a little more softly this time.
"Getting away from you." He said stepping into his car.
She was drenched.
She didn't care.
"I can see that. Why?"
"I...I'm so sorry." He looked back at her.
"Why are you sorry?"
"I don't want to ruin us."
"You're not."
"Yeah...Yeah...I kissed you."
"You did."
"This could fuck everything up."
"It could?"
He stood up. Leaning on his open door.
"Trust me. What happened in there. I wanted it, but I can't afford to lose you."
"Who says you will?"
"These things never end clean..."
"Who says it will end?"
She laid her hands on his chest.
"Always the optimist, aren't ya?" He says with a smile.
"I try...Listen, I can't tell you what's going to happen. I can't tell you that we will last forever...that we won't have problems. But I can tell that since we've become friends, you are all I've ever wanted. I can tell you that, that kiss you gave me in there was a longtime coming. And I can tell you that I don't want you to leave tonight."
"Well, that's a lot."
"Yeah."
"Lets go inside."
"Under one condition."
"Oh God...I'm scared...what?"
"Kiss me again, smartass."
"In the rain?"
"It's always been a fantasy of mine." She said in between kissing his cheeks and forehead.
"Oh yeah?"
"Yeah. Kiss me."
And he did.
"It's raining." He said when they ended her dream come true.
"Yeah it is. Inside?"
"Okay. But what will we ever find to do in there?" He joked as he wrapped his arm around her waist.
"I can think of a few things." They headed towards the door.
"Checkers?"
"Ah. You read my mind."
"So tell me more about this fantasy."
"Well, buddy I do believe we're acting it out right now."
-The End.
