Forget Me Not

Gibbs walked into his house of nearly thirty years, as he did he noticed the basement light was on. He used to leave his front door unlocked but now he had too many people he wanted to keep out. Those that mattered to him either had keys or could pick locks. He rested his hand on his weapon as he wondered who could be a bad guy, or maybe Ryan was back serving up new lies with a side of mind games.

He was halfway down the stairs when he spied a familiar set of curls. Ziva. Ziva, who should have been recuperating at home after the explosion in the Navy Yard, but Gibbs, knew why she was in his rustic basement. It was the same reason Abby had been completely inconsolable just two days before. With each passing year, it did not seem to get any easier. Kate was still mourned; she was cried for and reminisced about. Ziva consequently would hide, acting less sociable. Coming to work only to work. She would retreat feeling so guilty that it was her brother that took Kate from them, taking their friend, their colleague. She also had to face her remorse over what had happened in the dark basement seven years ago. What she had done with her own gun. Her own hand.

"Ziver," he whispered. She turned around. Her face was paler and her eyes red telling him she had been crying. Her tough girl façade had been weakened over the years and she no longer felt shame in expressing her sadness, but she still felt such shame in crying over him.

"He was my brother," she whispered, her voice breaking. Her eyes bulged as tears threatened to fall.

"I know," Gibbs whispered as he pulled her close.

Seeing her in this state made guilt grow in his gut. He had often wished that the choice she had made on that stormy night had not had to be made. He wished that it hadn't been her bullet in the back of Ari's head. But it had. Now he had to be there for her as the feelings resurfaced as she punished herself for her actions.

"I just want to forget," she cried, as the tears finally fell.

Gibbs did too. He knew he never would and neither would she. They would both carry what had happened on that unforgettable night to their grave.
