Right Kind of Wrong

Shannon Gibbs took a deep breath as her unborn child kicked. Her father-in-law smiled as he felt the tiny kicks. Shannon and Gibbs were visiting his father before Gibbs was to be deployed. A deployment, which was expected to last longer than her pregnancy. Shannon tried not to think of how hard the next few months would be on her, she just wanted to enjoy the few weeks Gibbs had left stateside.

"I do not think I will get used to that," she whispered, as Jackson sat back in his seat. The younger Gibbs walked in from the kitchen and presented his wife with a cup of tea.

"Our sons gonna be a quarterback with those kicks," Gibbs told his father, as he rested his hand on Shannon's swollen belly.

"Our daughter will do no such thing," Shannon responded as she leaned her back into the chair hoping to get comfortable but knowing her effort was futile.

"Son," Gibbs declared. Their argument was not unfamiliar, since they had agreed to wait for the birth to know the sex of the child, they had argued about the child's sex. Regardless of sex, the child was already loved by both parents and its extended family, and above else all Shannon and Gibbs wanted was a healthy child.

"It's a girl," Shannon replied, as she took a sip of the tea.

"A mother always knows," Jackson interfered. "Your mother was certain you were a boy."

Gibbs walked into his quarters exhausted from his watch duty. He looked up at the photograph of Shannon, next to the sonogram of his unborn child pinned to his notice board. As he moved toward the bed he noticed an envelope addressed to him, waiting for him.

He opened the envelope and a photograph fell out along with a letter from Shannon. The photograph showed Shannon holding a baby with a pink hat on. He was wrong, Shannon was right. The baby was a girl. He read the baby girls statistics marveling at his new child. He memorized her birth weight, length and birthday. He smiled as he read the girl's name, Kelly Ann Gibbs. He smiled at his mother's name which was now a part of his little girls.

He pinned the photograph up on the notice board next to the others, and took one last look at his beautiful daughter. He could not be more glad that he was wrong.
