Now don't get me wrong, I like to believe I have a huge amount of patience. Especially with computers. Which is a good thing, seeing as I am a clinical information technology systems trainer. BUT. There are times when I hate them!!!!
i recently bought a very pretty acre touchscreen laptop. Top spec, slimline, and a hell of a lot faster than my poor old laptop that took almost 20 mins to start up.
ok, so I had to learn windows 8 and coming from windows XP, that is a very big leap. No problem, says I, I have to learn new systems regularly for work, so am used to finding my way around. But little did I realise just what a big leap it would be!
especially when your touchpad stops working...
that's ok, I will check for more up to date drivers for the touchpad. Found one, and then installed it.
BIG MISTAKE. HUGE!
Not only did it not fix the problem, it then completely rendered the keyboard utterly useless.
That's ok, says I, I can use the touchscreen keyboard to fix it.
oh no you don't, says the laptop, It will make things a whole lot harder.
luckily my iPad came to the rescue, but all the Microsoft forums suggested a corrupted bios or registry file. Download the latest.
ok, so I struggle to navigate with the extra sensitive touchscreen keyboard, only to find it hasn't got any device drivers for the keyboard.i should contact them Monday to Friday before 5pm. By that time it was well past that.
ok, I still won't be beaten. I manage to get onto Microsoft live chat. Based in the States, they are bound to be there. They were. Ever so helpful...in just confirming that I need to contact the laptop manufacturer.
so now I'm getting dizzy with all the going round in circles!
my biggest problem was that I hadn't set a system restore point.
then I had an epiphany!
Then I suddenly remembered that the later versions do an automatic restore point. It was dated yesterday so some of my work on the next chapter would be lost...not happy!
So now, almost five hours later, I now have my keyboard back, and have managed to restart all my hard work I've done on the next chapter...
I have learnt my lesson. I have now created a system restore point....
and now have a huge glass of wine!!!
