Scone is such an odd word. The pronunciation doesn't appear to be regional and doesn't appear to be class-driven either. I was raised in the Home Counties and say scon, and was at university with a girl from Grimsby who said scown.

There's a bit of that with castle too. ca-sle v car-sle.

One should not forget the Stone of Scone (Skoon); the Scots won't let us forget it to be true.

I'm a southerner and it still rhymes with 'on' :o)

Blame my northeastern (Sunderland) granny! Funny- I pronounce 'bath' with a long 'a' (to rhyme with laugh) but 'castle' with a short one.

It is very curious
that doesn't make me furious
but I never used to write such rhymes.
Maybe it is a sign of the times
or have I been freed
from the evil deed
that dictated my life
and caused such trouble and strife?

Cats and rhymes can make you happy
Without them you could be quite snappy
When you feel bad, eat a bun
And hug a kitty in the sun!

:)

Second line scans a bit better without the quite. IMO that is.
