Alice does a comic!(?)

So, this is my very first comic since I was 16. (And I didn't even finish penciling that one. No, it cannot be seen anywhere online and probably only exists somewhere in a basement in Michigan, never to be heard from again...)

This will be published in an upcoming graphic novel, Reading With Pictures, a benefit anthology used to promote the reading of comics in the classroom. It will be available in comic book stores around the country starting August 18th, or you can pre-order your copy now by E-mailing info@readingwithpictures.org or going to your local comic book shop and pre-ordering there.

I was asked to work on a 2-page splash layout that incorporated the concept of education in some way. Being that I'm not a writer and my husband is, I dragged him into it. We chose to go with a twist on the classical Greek myth, The Judgement of Paris, wherein the protagonist must choose what goddess was most beautiful between Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite.

I'm a Greek mythology nerd, so I put a lot of symbolism in the designs of the goddesses.

Athena has her renowned gray eyes, but I also gave her gray hair (I loooove gray hair.) to emphasize her "wise" side. She's also wearing her Aegis, which is trimmed with olive leaves (one of her sacred plants). Her armor is a feminized version of ancient Greek armor, as she is also the goddess of war. Ironically.

Aphrodite is wearing one of her sacred flowers, the rose, as well as her famous Magical Girdle... that makes people fall in love with her. I did my research to depict what the ancient Greeks consider "girdles". I assume the fact that she wore it in a way to enhance her breasts had something to do with the "magical" qualities. She has strawberry blonde hair, as Boticelli depicted Venus, and sea-green eyes that are reminiscent of her birth origins.

Hera is wearing a fleur-de-lis brooch and crown (as she is the queen of all goddesses), as the lily that the fleur-de-lis symbolizes is one of her sacred flowers. Also, the fleur-de-lis has been used to symbolize power throughout history -- what better icon to represent Hera, who offered Paris rulership over Europe and Asia?

Lots of people I love and respect are in this book, including my former classmate and college floormate, the ever so talented Tintin Pantoja. I'm really happy to be included with such a fantastic bunch of artists. (Jill Thompson of Sandman fame, Raina Telgemeier of The Baby-Sitters' Club fame)
