we watch the heavy heat
dam up the mouths of
stuttering strangers.
the earth falls to a thousand
splintered brinks and
we barely break even,
barely have change for the
tolls.
the bones grow into mosaics
in the wide belly of the sandworld,
their white poles sliding
against the marigold clay
like pale horses.
the weight of nations
winds volcanic,
an old storm sedimenting,
coming home to roost.
we crawl our hands together
like shy spiders.
our knees collapse to the
unbearable earth,
pray for the absolution
of this desert.
