CHAPTER 1: THE CALL

"I hate the Suzuki's."
I've always hated the Suzuki's.
I was born to hate the Suzuki's.
I sat in my work chair inside a white washed cubicle, just staring at the telephone. It was the third time today that my mother called me at work, making sure I knew what was to happen tomorrow at my new school and how I would introduce myself. A business college that was owned by none other than our family's worst enemies; the Suzuki's. If it wasn't for them and all their worthless lies, I wouldn't have to go to that school in the first place and my father wouldn't be in prison right now. As if I didn't have enough reason to hate them already, they just knew how to barge into our lives and ruin everything.

"Please don't call..." I whispered out loud to myself. Just then, the phone rang with a deafening ring and I practically jumped out of my seat. Luckily it wasn't my phone line that had rung. Tora, my co-worker and only friend here, picked up the receiver. I was relieved that the call wasn't for me as I laid my hand on my chest to settle my frog jumping heart but was easily disgusted by Tora's playful laughter in the cubicle next to mine. I stared at Tora over the small wall that separated us, who just gave me a guilty look, mouthing that he was sorry. He and I had plans for tonight to relieve all the stress of working, and what better way to relieve stress than drinking a bit of Sake with a good friend? But seeing the way things were going tonight, it seems that those plans might be canceled.

I watched Tora as he did his thing. "Sounds nice, and what are you wearing underneath that skirt?" Call me strange, but I love watching Tora as he makes his moves. He makes the female clients on the phone feel as if they were speaking to a genuine heart throb, making them feel protected and truly wanted when in reality, Tora sat in his cubicle playing his PSP, faking his pleasures all the way through. If you haven't guessed it by now, I have a part time job as a Phone Sex operator.

I looked up at the clock that was pinned up on the white wall behind me. 12:32 am. Bored and frustrated, I looked at the telephone and then over at Tora.
"Psst..." I whispered over to him. "Are you sure we get off at 1 am?" He nodded his head to me and continued with his revolting customer.
Just 28 more minutes... I thought. Please, please don't call. Five minutes passed and my phone was silent. Just so I had something to do, I began gathering all of my belongings, and that's when my heart stopped. The phone rang throughout the cubicles and I didn't want to answer it. I looked over at Tora hoping to figure out what to do when he motioned for me to answer the phone. In agony I answered the phone with my best impression of Tora's seductive tone, yet I was nowhere near good at it. I guess this is the price one must pay if they want to rebel against their family for sending you off to a horrible business school.

"Forbidden Pleasures, you have connected to Shou. How may I fulfill you tonight?"
This was almost as embarrassing as the time my mother opened the dressing rooms at the mall while I was trying to get a new pair of boxers on. You should have seen the girls scream, I never lived that down until after high school was finally over.
I waited for an answer from the caller but received none, only adding to the embarrassment I already felt rushing to my face. Yet at the same time, I was thankful. It must be another prank call, I thought, when I suddenly heard an aggravated sigh on the other side of the line.

"Damn that Aoi." The man said, his voice deep with a hint of cool and collectiveness. Shit, maybe he should work here instead. "Excuse me?" I said to the man who obviously got the wrong number. This hot line was for women only with the occasionally gay males who called, which was usually a rarity. I have yet to encounter a gay man, so please dont let this one be gay.
He sighed again, "Gomen nasai," he said. "My idiot friend must have changed the number on my speed dial to this number. I'm sure the monster found it amusing."
"Well," I felt awkward, "then you must have the wrong number."
"Obviously," he continued. "Is that not what I just said?"

Was he mocking me? I could have sworn that he was mocking me. This stranger was not going to get away with this.
"There is no need for rudeness,Sir." The line was quiet for a second, at least just a second.
"You're right," he said. "My apologies."
It went quiet again. My hand was itching with the urge to hang up the phone but as the stranger continued speaking, I realized that my urges weren't going to be fulfilled, despite our companies motto.

"Is this not a hot line where the desperate receive pleasure over the phone?"
Oh great, another pervert. Or is he just mocking me again?
"Yes. It is." I responded rather annoyed.
"Hmm, I see. Why is it that you chose a job so degrading as this?" I could see the curve of a smirk on his face just by the tone of his voice. He was mocking me, the stupid bastard.

"Listen here bub," I shouted, "you have no idea how hard this job can be with disgusting people like yourself always demanding something of us. You have no idea."
"First of all," he stated, "I did not call you from my own free will, it was the wrong number and I wouldn't waste my time with silly phone games. Secondly, how hard can faking an orgasm be?"

I have always been the type of person who could control their anger no matter what the situation, but this person was seriously pushing it.
"Honestly," he continued. "Why choose this job if it's so difficult for you to live up to it's sexual standards?"
Oh... this guy is an asshole.
"I chose this job as a rebellion! My ass is getting transfered from a great music school I have been attending, to some shitty ass business school in a place I fucking hate, just because I can't afford my music school anymore! You think I want to be an heir? No! This is my only way of rebellion against my family... even if it brings some shame."

The line stayed silent again but was broken by him as usual. "Well, why not ask for someone's help?"
"Right, there's no one who could help me now."
"why not ask one of your many customers?"
I could hear the sarcasm in his voice and now, there was nothing that would hold me back from exploding into the phone.
"FUCK YOU! I'm going to kick your ass!"

Apparently the few people that were still working overheard my "conversation." Tora rushed to my side and placed his hands on my shoulder, trying to stop me from breaking down the cubicle wall I didn't know I had been pounding on.
"I was just trying to help." the stranger said over the phone in that cool and collected tone that now seemed to piss me off.
"Yeah, bullshit. I don't even know your name."

"Reita," he said.
"What?"
"My name," he said annoyed. " You wanted to know my name."
I was still pissed off at this idiot. As if I was really interested in his damn name. Reita. Who the hell was named Reita these days? Only idiots. Then again, who the hell went around calling themselves Shou? I mentally smacked myself and sighed, Tora's eyes burning into me as he wanted to know what was going on.
"Look," I said, "if you don't mind my shift ends in 5 minutes and I'm in dire need of a drink. So, I'm hanging up."
"Shou-san, wait."

He said my name as if he knew me, but of course, no one called me by this name except my clients or Tora and his friends. The closest people called me by my real name, either Kazamasa, or Kohara-san with the occasional Kaza-kun from girls. But from here on out, I would officially be renamed as Shou. Not only at work, but at my new school. My mother said it was better this way, that way the Kohara name wouldn't stir up any trouble on Suzuki property. It was a hard deal and I felt as though I was betraying everything the Kohara family stood for, everything I stood for by going to the Suzuki business college. My father was tried for attempted man slaughter against the head of the Suzuki's, we all knew it wasn't his fault, it was all an accident that started off with foolish bickering over the Suzuki's trying to buy off our land. I heard that even the only son of Suzuki-san was there and saw how the whole thing happened, his father almost dying before him. But he lied in court, and he lied well. My father had only tried to defend himself from Suzuki-san's threats but things got heavy as Suzuki-san brought in a bulldozer to tear down our property, property he didn't even own. My mother was there, and boy she had the worst scare of her life and now my father is in jail and Suzuki-san is hospitalized. We weren't rich to begin with, even if our land was rich in soil and our crops harvested good, his jail time and lawyer cost us so much money it set us back. We're hoping to have a good harvest this year, because without it, we might be forced to sell some of our virgin land. I have never met anyone of the Suzuki's other than Suzuki-san himself, but when I do, I know I won't feel anything but hatred for them.

"Shou-san?" both Tora and the stranger named Reita addressed me at the same time, I snapped back to reality and shook away my thoughts.
"Hai... " I called into the phone, nudging Tora to sit down again as I was fine.
"I would like to help you, if you don't mind. I can assure you a way out of business school as I attend one myself. Meet me for drinks once you're off of work, we can speak then."
"EH?!" I was shocked, my mouth falling into a gaping hole of awe as Tora shoved at my shoulder trying to get info out of me. "You can't be serious."
"Which bar will you be at? I'll meet you there."
I shook my head in disbelief at what I was hearing, this couldn't be real. The guy I had just been arguing with was inviting me to drinks and offering me his help with my dilemma? He must be gay.
"Sorry, but I'm going with a friend tonight and I'm not up for a date."
I peeked my eye over at Tora who had an apologetic look on his face. It seemed the boss had called him while I was arguing and asked Tora to stay overtime, which only meant our plans for drinks were officially ruined. He mouthed a sorry to me but I just shrugged. I still wasn't going to go with this Reita guy.

"Trust me, I wasn't asking you out on a date. Is it so wrong to receive my help?"
I sighed into the phone and rubbed at my tired eyes. It was already ten minutes after my shift ended and I knew I wasn't going to get paid overtime. That still didn't mean I was going to go with him, right?

"Fine," I sighed, "Meet me at Siva&Diva's, the bar at the Shibuya shopping district. Look for a guy with dark brown hair and drowsy eyes."
"That's pretty much everyone."
I rolled my eyes to Tora who had a giant grin on his face, I knew he found this more amusing than it actually was.
"Fine," I spoke into the phone again, "What do you look like instead?"
"I'm a short balding man with a pertruding beer belly."
I chuckled into the phone at his humor, "That's pretty much everyone there."
He chuckled in response, "Actually, just look for a tall thin blond man in a suit with hair sticking up in somewhat of a faux hawk. Trust me, there won't be anyone else like me there."
I shrugged, "Alright, I'll meet you there in thirty minutes."
"See you there.."
"Oh,and Reita-san?"
"Hai..."
"This call has cost you a fortune."

I hung up the phone with a long sigh and leaned into my chair. Tora's eyes bore into me as I casually glanced over to him.
"Tora, that was the weirdest phone call I've had. And trust me, I've spoken to a masochistic here before and it was not as strange as this."
"What did he say?"
My thoughts drifted off as I pictured meeting up with this guy. My mind casually drifting itself off into the worst case scenario where he was some kind of black market organ doner and wanted me for my liver.
"SHOU-KUN!" I jumped, startled that Tora had shouted my name. Then again, I wasn't paying attention.
"Shou, what did he say?"
"Nothing really," I said as I rubbed at my tired eyes. "He's just going to be waiting for me at Siva&Diva's. Hey, do you think Nao's working there tonight?"
Tora shrugged, "Most likely, I mean him and Saga are the owners. Anyway, are you going to meet him?"
"No."
"Eh?"
I stood and grabbed my things, hanging my black messenger bag with a blue star on the front to my right side. I was ready to leave, and yes, I was not going to meet up with the stranger known as Reita. He could wait there all he wants, but I'm not so crazy that I'll meet up with a random stranger. No less at a bar, even if it was owned by friends.
"Then why'd you tell him to meet you up?"
"I told him that so I could get him off my case. He's a stranger, who knows what he could do to me."
Tora nodded in understanding, "True. But still, poor guy."
I sighed and headed towards the door, "Well, I'm out of here. I'll see you tomorrow Tora."
"Hai, ja ne. Drive safely."
"Yeah... "

I wasn't so tired anymore that by the time I made it out to the parking structure and into my electric blue classic Mustang, I began thinking of actually meeting up at Siva&Diva's. If anything, I could just hang out with Nao and Saga. I stuck my keys into the ignition, the car starting with a tremendous roar and drove off into the early morning darkness.
