Not very helpful, I'm afraid. Generally, it depends upon what was discussed in the interview. Definitely, if you haven't heard by by one week later, I think that you're justified in asking them for an update.
And when you ask for an update, you can also establish a regular communication on the time schedule they're on for hiring. :)
I don't think there's any harm in following up, even as soon as a day or two after the interview, with a simple "thanks for your time" sort of message. I also think it's perfectly reasonable to ask when they anticipate they will be making a decision. Obviously if they have lots of people to interview, that will take some time, and you don't want to come off seeming like a pest, but one call or email or note asking them about their anticipated time frame is likely to be interpreted as you taking initiative and showing genuine interest. And yeah, a week is a good maximum time to wait.
You've ever hired people for retail, so anything that gave you a good impression back in those days probably would give your potential employer a good impression now.
I always write a thank-you note right after an interview, so maybe that shortens the interval, but for me it's usually been a matter of days. Example: most recent job, interviewed Friday afternoon, got called Saturday afternoon with the offer (but I was surprised with the speed of that, too). Hope it goes well! Good luck!
