Let's talk about music!

I have very specific songs that I prefer to listen to while working on my Underland inspired fics. Most of them pertain either to a specific character or the interaction between certain characters. Here's a few examples.

I'm a hard rock chick at heart, I listen to bits of everything. Here are some songs I've written to recently for AiW fics, mostly my current WIP over on ff.net, Possible Side Effects.

"What a Shame" Shinedown

The lyrics to this song aren't what really gets me, it's the opening notes. They're beautiful, yet haunting. Perfect for dream sequences.

(Iracebeth/Stayne) "Dirty Work" Halestorm

Get on your knees and let the games begin
Bow to your Queen and I will crown your head
'Cause I can make you every inch a king
Before I do tell me, what's in it for me?

I need someone young, willing and able
You need someone old enough to know better
I want you to

Do my dirty work
Do my dirty work (x3)

Let me be your labor of love
My royal garden needs a hired man
Plant your seed, darlin'
My roses are in your hands"

(Tarrant) "Scalliwag" Celtic Storm

I'll be rapping at your window
I'll be rapping at your window
I'll be knocking at your door
I'll be tip tippy tapping, tippy tapping on the floor
With me fine silk britches and a feather in me hat
If I run into your father then I'll stop and have a chat!
Cutting through your garden on the way to rendezvous and the owls in the trees are hooting "who are you?"
And the mice and the cats and the spiders and the bats
we're dancing 'round the kitchen like a pack of acrobats

Run away, Run away with the traveling show Run away with the rambling gypsy oh!

Come on and wade, way out into the wayer with me, we're drowning on dry land.
Come on and wade way out into the water with me... Jump in and take my hand.

A roving and a running and a riding on the sea and everywhere we go as happy as can be
All the mountains and the valleys and the rivers and the streams,
all the lovely places that you've seen in your dreams
I'll give you the heavens, the stars in the sky,
every wooded creature, every bird and butterfly
I've never had a fotune not a penny will you find
you're my one and only treasure, you can leave all the rest behind.

I'm definitely going to have to check into some of these songs -- I'm always looking for some new awesome music. :)

Usually when I'm writing, I listen to instrumental music, especially when I'm not feeling very inspired. Those sorts of things can really help me, especially when I'm listening to something that goes from soft love themes to deep and dramatic battling sequence scores.

Alice and Hatter basically blew that one away for me. I have a few songs that I listen to, but only three that I listen to with any regularity while I write (especially for my stories like "Home to Underland" and later chapters of "Shades of Grey" over on ff.net).

"Haunted" - Kelly Clarkson

I think of this song as after she leaves Wonderland, and from both Hatter and ALice's POV, despite the fact it's sung from a woman's POV. The lyrics that really struck me are as follows:

"Shadows linger
Only to my eye
I see you, I feel you
Don't leave my side
It's not fair
Just when I found my world
They took you, they broke you, they tore out your heart" -Alice

"I miss you, you hurt me
You left with a smile
Mistaken, your sadness
Was hiding inside
Now all that's left
Are the pieces to find
The mystery you kept
The soul behind a guise" -Hatter

"Bring me to Life" - Evanescence

This one is also from Alice and Hatter's POVs, in my mind. It's a very dramatic song on its own, but I think putting in the perspective of those two, personally it just knocks me backwards. Particularly the chorus:

"(Wake me up)
Wake me up inside
(I can’t wake up)
Wake me up inside
(Save me)
call my name and save me from the dark
(Wake me up)
bid my blood to run
(I can’t wake up)
before I come undone
(Save me)
save me from the nothing I’ve become

Bring me to life
(I've been living a lie, there's nothing inside)
Bring me to life"

"Whisper" - Evanescence

Basically it's the whole song for me. I see this most specifically as Alice's song through the entire movie, especially toward the end, as she's debating whether to return to England or stay in Underland. There's also a little hinting of Alice/Hatter in the lyrics here and there to me.

"Catch me as I fall
Say you're here and it's all over now
Speaking to the atmosphere
No one's here and I fall into myself
This truth drives me
Into madness
I know I can stop the pain
If I will it all away

[Chorus:]
Don't turn away
(Don't give in to the pain)
Don't try to hide
(Though they're screaming your name)
Don't close your eyes
(God knows what lies behind them)
Don't turn out the light
(Never sleep never die)

I'm frightened by what I see
But somehow I know
That there's much more to come
Immobilized by my fear
And soon to be
Blinded by tears
I can stop the pain
If I will it all away

[Chorus]

Fallen angels at my feet
Whispered voices at my ear
Death before my eyes
Lying next to me I fear
She beckons me
Shall I give in
Upon my end shall I begin
Forsaking all I've fallen for
I rise to meet the end"

That "Scalliwag" sounds really interesting. You wouldn't happen to have an mp3 to share? :')
