I've been itching to write lately, and I have multiple ideas rolling around in my mind in various fandoms, but rather than commit to actually writing a fic, I did the ficlet meme thing.
My characters! Much more varied this time, so it was harder to get them to work, but it was fun, all the same.
1. Ed Elric (FMA)
2. Al Elric (FMA)
3. Roy Mustang (FMA)
4. Winry Rockbelt (FMA)
5. Sam Flynn (TRON)
6. Tronzler (TRON)
7. Percy Jackson (PJO)
8. Annabeth chase (PJO)
9. Nico di Angelo (PJO)
10. Gwaine (MERLIN)
1. First time (4/6)
Winry/Tronzler
She's worked with automail far too much not to notice that he isn't fully human, but that's far from a problem; her hands work better with artificial parts, anyway.
2. Angst (7)
Percy Jackson
He's saved Olympus and Camp and all of Manhattan, and he's trying his best, but there are still so many he couldn't save and still so many who need saving, and when Nico doesn't speak for days after a battle, Percy knows it's his faults that are weighing Nico down, that if Percy could just be better, Nico would have a few less souls to usher into Hades and he wouldn't look so dead, himself.
3. AU (1/8)
Ed/Annabeth
Lieutenant Chase may be only just that-a lieutenant-but she's the best strategist the military's seen in years, and when she orders Ed specifically to the front lines despite him having displayed no notable skills, he wonders if it's because she sees more than most people, if it's because she knows his secret and what it means.
4. Threesome (3/6/9)
Roy/Tronzler/Nico
Tron seems especially hard to kill, and no one seems to stay dead around Nico, so Roy keeps them close and doesn't ask too many questions-gift horses, and all of that.
5. Hurt/comfort (5/10)
Sam/Gwaine
Gwaine throws the first punch.
"What the fuck, Gwaine?" Sam shouts, hand cupping his jaw. "I was just trying to help!"
"I don't need your help," Gwaine spits back immediately, even though he knows that's not true. He may have been losing the fight, but his pride is still injured more than anything else.
Gwaine doesn't look at him and Sam slowly reins in his temper. He pauses briefly as he walks past Gwaine, reaching out and putting a hand on his arm. "You're welcome," Sam says, not unkindly.
6. Crack (1)
Ed
"One more," Ed says, voice slightly muffled by the surgical mask. "Just one more. You got it," and a couple of agonizing screams later, he's wiping the blood from the newborn's body with steady hands.
"It's a boy," he tells her, awe in his voice, as he places the baby in his mother's arms; and even though he's been doing this for years, it will never not be the most miraculous thing he's ever seen.
7. Horror (10)
Gwaine
Merlin's eyes are blazing gold and his hands are soaked in other men's blood and he's laughing, hysterically-a sound unlike anything Gwaine's ever heard, and one that will haunt him after other ghosts of the battle have long been put to rest.
8. Babyfic (5/9)
Sam/Nico
Nico summons the skeleton of a kitten for her play with.
"I'm not sure that's the best approach," Sam tells him, disapproving.
"Yeah, because she was real satisfied with your phone," Nico remarks scathingly, pointing to the heap of rubble that was once said phone. Sam concedes the point.
"Both of you should just give up," Quorra comments from the kitchen, longsuffering.
9. Dark (2/8)
Al/Annabeth
"That doesn't make sense," Annabeth declares, in a tone that tells Alphonse she's not used to being wrong. "You can't just create things like that."
"It's not creation," Al says simply, matter-of-factly. "It's an equivalent exchange, an equation. Altering one thing to make it something else is different from making something from nothing."
Annabeth hears him, but it doesn't add up. "Not even the gods-" she starts to say, but Al cuts her off.
"There are no gods here," he says, in a tone that stops Annabeth's protest cold on her lips.
10. Romance (4/7)
Winry/Percy
Percy has a penchant for breaking things; Winry loves this about him, because there is never a scarcity of things to fix.
Made in heaven, Percy thinks.
11. Deathfic (2/3)
Al/Roy
Five years after Alphonse leaves Izumi, a report lands on Fuhrer Mustang's desk in Central, telling of an unexplained and unexpected annihilation of a major border city in the North. There are no survivors, and the only leads as to what happened are a few whispered rumors in neighboring cities of an explosion of red light on the night of the massacre.
Alphonse does not return.
Roy's pretty sure he knows what happened. He doesn't want to believe it, can't believe that Al would do it, but something Riza said comes back to him-something about the Elrics' love for each other, about how she was surprised Al could live without his brother.
He knows he got them into this mess and that he couldn't protect them, either time. The loss of the Elrics weighs on him more heavily than the loss of any city, any state, and he doesn't want to believe it, refuses to believe it because he can't lose them both, he can't-
12. AU (8/9)
Annabeth/Nico
The sharp lines and acute angles of Nico's body fall prey easily to Annabeth's most basic aesthetic trappings and her fingers trace his scars with a fervent intensity, like she is committing them to memory, like their shapes will soon litter the blueprints that are sprawled everywhere across her small dorm.
Nico never says much, but his eyes are sad and haunted, and she thinks sometimes, offhandedly, that he looks like he belongs in another world, one where sunlight does not reach.
13. Dark (4/3)
Winry/Roy
Under orders or not, regretful or not, self-loathing or not, he is the reason Winry doesn't have parents anymore, and he thinks that he would give Winry anything she wanted in exchange for that, in payment of that debt; but she doesn't ask him for anything-she only watches, from the edges, like she's biding her time.
14. Threesome (5/7/1)
Sam/Percy/Ed
Percy summons water from the tap (breaking it, he notes with a cringe) which Ed just breaks down into gas with a clap and an easy laugh, and Sam mumbles something about "show offs" and "testosterone" before quickly and cleanly kicking both of their asses.
(Needless to say, sex ends in bruises more than anything else, and not the kind made with lips and teeth. Well, okay, not just that kind).
15. Amnesia (2/10)
Al/Gwaine This one kinda got away from me...
Al comes to in a land he doesn't recognize, with a man he doesn't know, and a blinding, white-hot pain sears through his entire body when he tries to stand.
"Easy," the man says, coming to his side, bracing him easily as if it's not the first time he's had to. The man offers him a flask and Al swigs from it gratefully, the burn of the liquor pulling his senses back into line.
"I take it you're not from around here," the man comments with a hint of amusement, but Al doesn't get the joke. The last thing he remembers is the shadow of the gate, the clanging echo of the doors shutting behind him, and falling, falling, before waking up to the warmth of a fire and the smell of a forest.
"No, I'm not. I'm from…a town called…" Al doesn't know what to say.
"Don't worry," the man says, sounding truly unconcerned. "A man's business is his own. But I should warn you: you're close to Camelot, and they don't appreciate things like that, if you get my meaning." He points to the trunk of a nearby tree, where Al can see something circular carved into its bark. He stands, slowly this time, and goes to get a closer look.
The markings are strange, shallowly carved, and oddly familiar. Al traces his finger over them, something niggling in the back of his mind.
"What are these?" he asks, to no one in particular-maybe to himself.
"I was going to ask you the same thing," the man says, sounding surprised. "You carved them, after all."
16. Hurt/comfort (8/6)
Annabeth/Tronzler
She's not home in San Francisco for more than a few hours before things go wrong. When Annabeth finds the source of the commotion, not unexpectedly, she also finds monsters. What she doesn't expect to find is a man fighting them, with the expertise and precision of someone who knows exactly what they're fighting.
The man is older, in his late thirties at least (and he looks older in comparison to other demigods, since Annabeth doesn't think she's ever seen one a day older than 25) and she watches him for a moment before slipping on her Yankees cap and going in to help.
One of the monsters manages to rake his claws across the man's arm before Annabeth's knife slides home and monster dust settles around them. She kneels beside him, with every intention of tending his wound. He refuses to show her the gash and avoids all of her questions, and in her growing frustration she settles with throwing a baggie of ambrosia at him.
He just looks at her, and when he stands and walks away, she realizes that there's not a drop of blood anywhere, and that the ambrosia is still untouched.
She watches him walk away, unmoving.
17. Crack (9/4)
Nico/Winry
"I could bring them back, you know," Nico says against her skin. "You got any cheeseburgers?"
"No, and that's okay," she tells him, wiggling her hips to shimmy him down her body a little more. "Cycle of life, and all that."
"If you're sure," he offers, and she nods, pushing his head between her legs.
There's silence for a while.
"Although, you know," Winry says, like it's an afterthought. "It's really too bad you weren't here when Ed and Al were. Could've saved everyone some serious trouble."
18. Genderswap (1/6)
Ed/Tronzler
"I need to get my sister's body back," Ed says, unflinching and unrepentant.
Tron nods, doesn't ask her for any further explanation. "I understand," she says, tracing over her palms and fingers almost subconsciously. "I've never been human," Tron admits, "but I know what it is to not be what you're meant to."
Ed looks at her, and it's like she's seeing her for the first time. "Okay," Ed says, and it really is that simple.
19. First time (2/7)
Al/Percy
Al closes his eyes as Percy's hands roam over his skin-his skin, and hell if any and every touch isn't like fire, like something he couldn't even remember wanting-and Ed's name is a litany on his tongue, because he can only imagine what his brother's hands would feel like, what patterns Ed's fingers would trace over his skin.
He thinks this is unfair to Percy, who doesn't know his past and thus couldn't possibly know what it is he really wants, but Percy mutters, "Yeah, Al, you're there, you're there, come for me, Al," and Al hears Ed's voice instead and he just can't bring himself to care.
20. Angst (3/8) WARNING for character death
Roy/Annabeth
After years of being the Elrics' commanding officer, Roy is somewhat accustomed to having his orders disregarded; but this time hurts him more than most, because while Ed and Al are usually moving away from the front lines, Annabeth charges into battle like she's invincible, and Roy could shout himself hoarse and Annabeth still wouldn't back down.
Her bronze knife slashes through a countless number of enemies, but they don't fall and turn to dust like she's used to, and Roy can only do so much to protect her from the alchemy against which she has no defense.
An attack hits him from behind and he turns his back for just a second, for a snap of his fingers, and when he turns back, she is gone. He scans the field frantically before looking to his feet, and then he is by her side in moments.
"Major Chase," he says, shaking her, willing her to come back to him. Her lips are moving, but she's looking at the sky behind his head, her eyes unfocused. "Annabeth," he says, more forcefully, and her gaze finds him, although she is still whispering the unfamiliar invocations of her religion.
"Your prayers won't be answered here," Roy tells her, sadly, just in time to see her eyes close, and not open again.
