London, the wheels are turning

Dec 06, 2008 18:06

Well I just wrote the longest entry ever and suddenly it disappeared! GRRRR it was like 2000 words long and now it is gone I am very, very angry!

This is what we did yesterday:

Buckingham Palace, Changing of the Guard. It is actually quite a long ceremony that takes about 40 minutes. Different soldiers march in from different places all carrying different things eg musical instruments or guns. Some go by on horses. The ones with musical instruments play for awhile and then they all march off again! There are hundreds of tourists there, so suprisingly enough I didn't really see much of it at all! It is VERY VERY busy!

Harrods: Harrods is a gigantic store which is completley full of designer labels of just about everything you can think of. It is very CLEAN and very BRIGHT and they don't have regular escalators, they have the EGYPITIAN escalator. Random. The food hall is amazing, there are about 100 varieties of everything (cheese, fudge, chocolates, oysters, bacon...). Bron and I bought some fudge which is not like most fudges that I eat it is kind of crumbly. We were going to have a coffee but it was about $10 australian so we passed and went to Starbucks instead...

Hyde Park: We went to Hyde Park which is absolutley huge! It is probably the size of or bigger than Albert Park. There is currently a kind of carnival there which is called 'Winter Wonderland'. There are food stalls, craft stalls and different rides. Everything is very christmas-y and there is even an ice skating rink. Bron had some gluewein (warm, spiced wine) and I went on a ride which was heaps of fun! We also visited the Peter Pan statue (hurrah!) and got pictures posing with it!

Oxford St: a huge street full of many clothes stores which are all boxing-day-sales busy. I got a dress at a place called Primark but everywhere was absolutley teeming with people and by the end it got alittle claustrophobic.

We ended up having tea at the hostel and playing Jenga! in the hostel bar for awhile before we hit the hay.

Today we went to Camden Markets which is a market taht is probably about 200m long. There are many clothing stalls and food stalls including a stall selling rather delicious strawberry skewers dipped in chocolate. Yummmmmmm.
We then went to see Big Ben and saw a few of the houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey at the same time. We also managed a quick stroll down Portobello Rd (Notting Hill) which has many pricey antiques but is tres cool none the less. There are also different coloured building facades...pastel colours, bright colours everything. The type of stuff you just don't see in Melbourne but that is incredible!

We are now back at the hostel because we are very tired and very soon I will be begging Bronnykins to come and get dinner with me because i am very hungry. Sweet.

Tomorrow we are leaving the hostel so I don't know when we will have internet again so you may not hear from me for awhile.

Take care daaaaah-lingks.
