(One) He has only ever been called 'Samuel' once. It was when his father told him not to come back if he left for college. Until then, he hadn't minded his full name.
(Two) When he was younger, he always introduced himself as 'Sammy'. He does so until he is twelve, and his father takes him on his first proper hunt. He breaks his arm and is knocked unconscious by the spirit they are hunting. When he wakes up in Dean's arms in the back of the car, his father and brother both say "Sammy!" in perfect unison. He feels both safe and incredibly vulnerable. After that, 'Sammy' feels like something secret, like it is part of the hunt. So only they can call him that. Only they are allowed in his secret, safe, fragile world.
(Three) Sam is terrified of fire, because for years it isn't a demon that took his mother, it is just the flame.
(Four) Jess is a terrible cook, but she enjoys it anyway. Sam is always scared the kitchen will go up in flames. November the second, 2005 is the first time she ever bakes cookies without burning anything. Sam finds this painfully ironic.
(Five) When Sam first meets him, he feels like everything will be alright, if an Angel of the Lord is willing to touch him, to shake his hand, without even thinking about what he is. Castiel isn't.
(Six) All of his Heavens were manipulated.
(Seven) He lied about not remembering Fort Douglas. He doesn't remember the shtriga, but he does remember afterwards. He remembers having a nightmare and waking in his father's arms, feeling cold and ill and scared. remembers Dad's anger. He remembers how John had packed their stuff without ever putting him down. He feels bad about it now he knows the circumstances, but it was one of the last times where he truly still believed that his daddy could chase away all the monsters.
(Eight) No one ever asks, like they asks Dean, but his best memory of his father is on his last day of high school, during the awards ceremony. They'd had a massive argument the night before about his "white picket fence fixation", and he storms off to school without speaking to John. He was so angry, sitting there in his stupid robe. He's been made valedictorian, but he is just wishing that his name didn't begin with a W, so he could be done and leave. When he finally does get onto the stage, halfway through his speech, he stumbles. His father is standing at the back, hidden in shadows, where he thinks Sam won't see.
(Nine) When he dies, that first time, he remembers what came before he woke up again. He isn't in Hell. But he isn't in Heaven either. He is floating, in void, and he can see with perfect clarity the whole plan; everything. When he wakes, he forgets. He knows that because of this, every death is his fault.
(Ten) He misses when Dean was bigger than him, and everything was made alright with a hug and a bowl of Lucky Charms.
