Another small ficlet written by yours truly =) :
~ * ~
I did defeat the Jabberwocky once.
I know I did.
But it seems only a vague memory now.
Why is it that I seem to forget a lot lately. Just like that funny man I’ve always seen in my dreams. The man with his embroidered clothes and carrot coloured hair. Did I promise him something in the end? It’s funny but I still miss him even after I’ve left and the dreams have become nothing more than bad nightmares again. His stormy eyes and the blackness crawling over his skin to cover the flesh beneath his eyes like bags.
Black hair like a raven, sprawled across my desk.
I wonder how long he’ll stay like this.
Probably until we’ve left China and he’ll retreat home again. I run a hand up into my hair and wonder why I had even allowed him to stay. I thought I could change him, if only a little. But once things are rotten they cannot be repaired.
I know, I checked a manual about how to repair a rotten section of floor. It only said you need to determine what piece of wood is rotten and then remove it to replace it.
My eyes drift back to the knave whose head is resting upon his hands. Does he know what his presence does to me? The man disguised as a sailor is still addressed as a knave in my mind. Isn’t that odd?
I close my eyes when I rest my head upon the pillow again. The sound of his breathing, almost snoring, makes me open my eyes again. One of my fingers swirls up into my hair as I stare to look at the ceiling of my cabin.
The ship rocks gently on the waves.
Oddly enough, for the first time in months, I feel completely at ease.
I’d never thought it to be possible again.
