OMG. I am discovering lots of lovely new songs these days, after a summer that felt oddly bereft of new music that put a smile on my face and made me bounce in my chair.
The Temper Trap, "Fader" - you may have heard this Melbourne, Australia-based band's other single, "Sweet Dispostion", which is a good pop song. "Fader" is a GREAT pop song. The hooky "woo ooo ooo ooo" in the chorus KILLS ME DEAD with its catchiness. They are playing here this Sunday night and while I'd love to go see them, I don't do Sunday night shows - guaranteed migraine the next day. But if they come to your town, highly recommended. I am listening to this on repeat from their MySpace right now.
The Limousines, "Internet Killed the Video Star". Chris and I were mulling over whether these guys had to pay royalties to the Buggles in order to use some of the phrasing in this song, not to mention the title. That said, it is a terrific updating of the concept, and puts me in mind of the first MGMT album, in a big way. Very 80s inspired, all synth and drum machines and overproduced vocals, and I love it. The lyrics are fun and often get right to the point - as with this fabulous line: "did you hear what they said/that rock and roll is dead/yeah it's like a zombie, it'll dig itself back up again".
