If I was a zombie I'd be undead right now. Kind of like I already am.

Um, so, you know what’s actually really, really good? Deceptively good?

Ultimate Fantastic Four is really, really good.

When I started it a few months ago I though, Eh, it’s okay. It’s fine. The art was mediocre, but worse than that was that the artist changed at least every volume. I hate when artists don’t stay consistent. I haaate it. And the writing was pretty okay, but the stories reminded me why I’ve always hated the FF; because they’re boring. They are so painfully, ridiculously boring.

So I was pleased when I got to Vol 4 and even though there was a new artist again and even though Mike Carey and Millar are distinctly not Bendis, I actually liked Jae Lee’s art and I thought the Inhuman storyline was good. Think Tank I could’ve done without, but it was fine for a two issue story. (And just as a side note on Lee: In terms of Ult FF I don’t think I could take him for much more than a volume at a time, but in a small dose it was very cool and had an incredible amount of atmosphere. I’m definitely up for reading more of his stuff, especially if it was for a darker title.) But anyway, the point is that I actually enjoyed reading Vol 4. I didn’t have to convince myself to slog through it like usual.

And then came… Vol 5. And guys, it was so good! It was amazing! (I want to say it was fantastic, but then I’d have to jump off a tall building.) I am so not interested in zombies, but UGH, MARVEL ZOMBIES, I GET IT, I GET IT. I get it and it is GOOD STUFF. And even though I hate to think of the Marvel and Ultimate U’s in even the same paragraph, I loved the crossover. It was so well-done. Magneto is another guy I’m really not interested in, but he was amazing here. Seeing him as a good guy- the last good guy, really- was so much fun and so powerful. He was really quite awesome. Oh hey, you know who else was awesome?

NAMOR, OH MY GOD. HE FREAKS ME OUT, MAN. HE FREAKS. ME. OUT.

And Mary Storm. If I was a swearing person, I would call her sooo many names. She’s my newest edition to my list of Really Awful Fictional Parents. (Yes, I do actually keep this list. I don’t really know why.) She also looks exactly like Sarah Palin. I can’t link to a picture because I fear spoilers, but guys. Guyssss. She really looks like Palin. Really really.

And then I read Vol 6, and I was shocked and delighted to find that it was JUST AS GOOD AS VOL 5. The skrulls are evil and Dr. Doom is evil and Mary Storm is EVIL and time traveling is crazy and awesome and the FF are amaaaazing and I love them and Sue/Reed 4EVA. And and and:

Jean: It’s really faint… like faded ink on an old newspaper… but does the word ”Super-Skrull” mean anything to you guys?
Sue: ”Super-Skrull?” Not especially.

ULTIMATE U, I LOVE YOU. DON’T EVER CHANGE.

Even though now you are grumble grumble I hate the world.

And Greg Land. Greg Laaaaand. I love him. We are talking real, true love, guys. I need him to stay with the title. I know the artists continue to switch, but I need him. I neeed him.

Uh. And. I kind of get what the big deal with Millar is all about now. He’s. Um. Ridiculously good. Very ridiculously good.

And I definitely just waxed poetic on Ultimate FF. That was unexpected. Kind of like when I waxed poetic on Avatar back in the day.

So I’m going to go set the table for Shabbat now. Shabbat shalom and happy Friday, everyone!

ultimate u, fantastic four, marvel, comics
