Eager tongues were seeking solace in the hollows of limbs today and the dark, damp caverns of lust yesterday
Your heart beat out a warning as I smiled at each passer-by, marveled at the stitching on your coat
Mine beat worry about your contentedness
Incessant scenes of apologetic dialogue dripping from my tongue onto your shoes
It was I who stained them, don’t blame the fruits and grains that bring two strangers into one bed
I’m reduced to rubble when faced with others’ accomplishments
Do you wonder, then, that I felt unworthy of your shoulder brushing my forearm
Words tiptoeing down the stairs for a midnight snack are caught in spotlights of apprehension
Don’t mention your insecurities
They’ve already been revealed through alarming repetition and the alacritous descent from companion to object of scorn and derision
Derision and scorn
Licked
Off the back
Of my spoon
