I think this is the most striking painting I've ever seen:

But there is so much human drama captured in this one scene, it is heartbreaking. It has burned itself into my mind ever since I first saw it in a U.S. History textbook about five years ago. Aside from his "Triple Self-Portrait" it is certainly the image that first pops in my mind whenever someone mentions Norman Rockwell, and I'd like to think the emotional effect it had has been an inspiration for how I approach character writing.
But Norman Rockwell is a pretty cool artist. He basically captured the spirit of America in his time with massive effect. He also has a neat last name.
As an aside, Sonic Youth's new album, Rather Ripped isn't as good as their older stuff (probably it's just lost that jagged sort of edge that I always appreciated), but that doesn't mean it isn't good!
