We all love music and we all hate music. List five music artists that you can't stand, and five that you can't live without.
Five artists that I can't stand:
1. Jessica Simpson - She could be on this list just for sampling John Cougar Mellencamp's "Jack and Diane" in her song "I Think I'm in Love With You." But then she had to go and attempt to take over the world, all while continuing to make crappy music, while I tried desperately to forget she existed. Then she dated John Mayer. The she decided it was a good idea to go country. See also: this video.
2. Amy Winehouse - The day I learned she was going to be doing the theme for the new James Bond, I almost cried; and the day I learned she backed out, was one of my happiest moments of my life /exaggeration. I loathe her and everything she represents.
3. The Pussycat Dolls - Do they even count as artists? They are such a joke. And could they please put some clothes on? I'm pretty sure that when they "performed" on So You Think You Can Dance this week, the lead girl (Nicole Snarzkladjs something or other) was wearing vinyl leggings as pants.
4. Kid Rock - Has anyone heard his latest song? "All Summer Long?" There are so many things wrong with this song: a) He samples "Werewolves of London" and "Sweet Home Alabama"...now allowed. b) He rhymes "things" with "things," and if that weren't bad enough, the line actually goes "We were trying different things, we were smoking funny things." Oh really? c) He name drops Northern Michigan, but instead of making it sound bad ass, he just makes it sound stupid.
5. Miley Cyrus - GO AWAY!!!! You are 15! You are not hot stuff, you are not a rockstar, you are not a stripper. You are a little girl! You can take the girl out of the trailer park but you can't take the trailer park out of the girl. Now put your effing tongue back in your mouth!
Honorable Mention: All that stupid rap/r&b crap they play on TRL these days (and my sister somehow knows all the words to, much to my horror). See: "Lollipop," "Lipgloss," "Sexy Can I," etc.
Five artists I can't live without (this is hard!):
1. John Mayer - Duh. This is my boy. He sings what I feel. His albums alone could be the soundtrack to my life and leave no event unaccompanied and no thought or feeling unrepresented.
2. Fall Out Boy - They never fail to make me jump around and dance like a jack ass.
3. Sara Bareilles - Because we need some estrogen on this list, and she is quite possibly my favorite female artist ever (and she has the perfect range that allows me to sing along).
4. Coldplay - Just beautiful, epic music. And it's been a long time since I've been this excited about a new album (David Cook's eventual album notwithstanding).
5. David Cook - I debated over whether or not to put him on here, since he is so new. But new or not, his music is in me now, and I hearing it never ceases to put a smile on my face. Not to mention, just like with John, a lot of songs on his pre-Idol album I find super relatable and have come to mean a lot to me.
So I feel kind of bad that the artists I can't live without is all contemporary artists. There were definitely some older artists who came up, but they didn't make the final cut. Narrowing down that list to five was super hard.
