Love and Legends: Altea Chapter 1

Jan 06, 2020 09:22

This is a game on Lovestruck, Voltage USA's Dating Game App. I installed it ages ago and it crashed, but I gave it another go and it's been working fine ever since, hooray! Here's my post explaining how this app works. These games are freemium: You can play for free, but it involves a lot of waiting and you don't get to see everything.

Th specific game I chose, Love and Legends, is about a 25 year old woman from Chicago who suddenly finds herself in a fantasy kingdom recovering from a war with a Witch Queen. She is captured by people working for the local king, and at first they're suspicious, especially since the witch queen's minions seem interested in her. But eventually she becomes a trusted friend and falls in love with one of the group (or one of the bad guys!) There's male and female love interests.

I played the first Chapter and a bit of the female wizard Altea. It's pretty sweet, a standard but entertaining fantasy romance, and I had a moderate amount of Feels. Most f/f paths are really bland but this is about as complex and engaging as a moderately good m/f path.

The story never quite resolves everything at once. Individual episodes often end in a fairly calm, happy place, but there's always hanging threads to keep you coming back for One More Episode, and Chapter 1 ended on a cliffhanger. I've currently read up to Chapter 2 Episode 2 and it was an ok-ish place to stop.

When I started, the game asked me three questions:
Men or Women? I chose women.
Slow burn or Whirlwind Romance? I chose slow burn.
Wizard or Werewolf? I chose Wizard, and thus Altea.

The love interests are:

August: An uptight jock paladin knight, the default love interest
Iseul: Zevran from Dragon Age eg a flirty elf rogue
Saerys: Reserved and mysterious (and a demon?)
Altea: Bouncy wizard woman
Reiner: The Good But Sad King
Alain: Evil Knight
Helena: Evil Sexy Sorceress

I don't see the werewolf? Would that choice have taken me to a different game??

Altea reminds me of Glimmer from She-ra grown up: talented and self confident, but impulsive, and feeling the need to prove herself. Also she's pink and sparkles. Unlike Glimmer she plays up how cute she is, but does so in part to mess with people because she's a bit of a troll.

The main villain for Altea's route is the very hot evil sorceress Helena. Who is also a LI, and the f/f/f dynamic is pretty fun, though it got a little too dubconny for me at one point.

The protagonist is unambiguously bi/pan, she says she's into "men, women, and people who don't tick either box", which was nice (I can forgive her not using the actual word, because they probably wouldn't recognise it) Hopefully she does the same on the dude routes too! Altea is known to be a lesbian and everyone's cool with it. She's a bit younger than the protagonist and has never dated before, and is cutely self conscious without feeling too tropily Innocent.

The male LIs aren't inspiring me much but are likeable and varied.

The sprite art is a bit meh, though the CGs are nice. The music is generic and there's no voice-acting. The writing is entertaining even if the quasi-medieval-but-mostly-modern language breaks my suspension of disbelief sometimes. Also there's SO LITTLE curiosity on either side about the two different worlds.

I unwisely used up some of the free premium currency (hearts) you get when you make an account on an early scene, it was enjoyably femslashy but not very emotionally significant. I have slowly been accruing more from daily random drops etc but not enough to unlock any further scenes. I guess if there's a specific scene I hear is REALLY good I can save up my hearts and go back and watch it.I could also pay the like $2 if I REALLY want to see it, I have gotten $2 of enjoyment out of this game, but ehhh. I haven't felt like I was missing much, the free version of the story works fine.

My main issue is reading in little drips and drabs, with no full catharsis or resolution. It's no worse than watching a mildy soapy TV show where every season ends on a cliff-hanger, I can see it being fun for a lot of people. But I'm not sure I'll play any more.
