Masterlist of Code Realize posts I'll give relevant backstory for anyone who either doesn't know the plot of Code Realize, or has forgotten it.
I started this months ago, got partway through, and then couldn't motivate myself to keep going. So here's what I wrote.
Against a black background, deep male voice ponders the nature of humans to be defined by our relationships.
Me: Huh, I don't remember Sherlock's voice being this sexy, but it's been a while.
The background fades into view: stone cliffs and the spray of falling water.
Me: OH. RIECHENBACH. THAT'S THE VOICE OF MORIARTY/ALIESTER.
Herlock and Aleister have a philosophical discussion on the beautiful feelings one might have before death, with a subtext of "No, you die." (Herlock's voice is perfectly nice, but less sexy. Sorry Herlock)
Herlock ponders the first time he met Cardia, and the curiosity he felt about the deep loneliness she hid beneath a calm exterior.
And then...Cardia POV!
So, backstory: Our setting is alternate universe steampunk London in the late 19th century. The protagonist Cardia is a clone created in a lab to power her mad scientist father's doomsday machine. There is a powerful gem embedded in her chest, growing with the help of her poisonous blood. At the start of the story, all she knows is that she woke alone in an empty mansion with no memory, with a note from her father telling her she must never leave, and never know love. And if she touches anyone or anything with her bare skin, it dissolves.
(I love otome)
Cardia eventually left the mansion and made a friend, but the local villagers attacked Cardia as a monster, and her friend died as a result of Cardia's poison. This left Cardia pretty traumatised.
But then she got rescued from the mansion by the thief Arsene Lupin, who was investigating her father. She became friends with him and other literary figures: Van Helsing, Victor Frankenstein, Saint Germain, and Impey Barbicane. Then they found the lab where she was grown and it became clear that she's not an amnesiac human girl who acquired poison blood, she's a homunculus who has never been and never can be human. Cardia ran away, convinced she was about to be reviled as a monster by her new friends.
One of the main villains is the British Special Intelligence agent Aliester, who is later revealed to be the criminal Moriarty. Aleister is running a secret super-soldier brainwashing program, an escapee of which is Jack the Ripper.
Herlock Sholmes is Sherlock Holmes with a very bad pseudonym.
So! Cardia wanders the slums of Lowtown, miserable and alone, and takes shelter from the rain in a sewer. Alas! She stumbles into Jack the Ripper.
Urrrgh I hate serial killer plots. But ooh! I get a choice!! I was worried these side stories would be entirely kinetic. Hmmm. Run away, or shove him THEN run away?
LET'S PICK VIOLENCE.
He catches her in the end but that was still satisfying.
Jack: You will be purified!
Cardia: You mean murdered >:/
Jack: I don't think you have any right to call me a murderer. You look harmless, but I can tell you've killed as well.
Cardia: D:
Jack: Shouldn't you pay for your sins with your life?
She agrees, and feels resigned to her fate, but part of her is determined to keep living despite herself, and instinctively she grabs at him with her bare hand, melting his flesh :D
He flails at her screaming in pain, but is disarmed by a gunshot from...some guy I've never seen before?
He's got short blonde hair, self confident swagger, and a pistol on a long chain. He describes himself as "a regular doctor with a habit of chasing after big cases, no thanks to a bad influence".
It's Watson! He's pretty cute...
Watson: No matter how good looking I am, try not to fall for me. My wife is my one and only.
Cardia: Don't worry, that won't happen.
Me: Uh. YEAH.
Jack escapes with his superhuman strength, shouting about REVENGE.
Watson: You wanted to avoid the rain, so you came into the sewers? Don't mess with adults, young lady.
Cardia: I had nowhere else to go ;_;
Watson: ... D: OK, FINE. YOU CAN LIVE WITH ME.
At his house, Cardia sees a photo of Watson, his wife Mary...and Herlock, wearing an embarrassed smile Cardia has never seen on him before.
Watson: That's my close friend Sherlock Holmes! Though he's dead now :(
Cardia: But this is Herlock Sholmes. I met him not long ago, working for Scotland Yard.
Watson: ...I SEE. EXCUSE ME, I HAVE SOME BUSINESS TO ATTEND TO INVOLVING A YARD BUDDY'S FACE AND MY FIST.
Afterwards, Watson grumpily leads her to Herlock's apartment (ON BAKER STREET! THAT BASTARD!) and shouts at the door until he's let in.
Herlock explains about chasing Moriarty, and faking his own death after their clash at Reichenbach falls. But if he survived, chances are Moriarty did too, so Herlock faked his own death and continued to investigate in secret. He apologises, but Watson isn't entirely convinced.
Herlock deducts that Cardia ran away from Lupin and the others, and she says they were too gentle: She is afraid to hurt those who are kind to her.
Herlock: I understand. But do you have any other acquaintances in London?
Cardia: I have noone :(
Watson: You stayed at my house and you know this bloke's secret alias, I think that makes us at least acquaintances! You can stay here!
Herlock: I was trying to persuade her to go back. But yes, you can stay. Though I am presently involved in a case of utmost peril.
So why not keep staying with Watson, instead of the unmarried young man who throws himself into danger? HA ok Watson then says he'll be moving in as Herlock's assistant, fair enough. And the case is, naturally, Jack the Ripper, sigh.
Watson: Who knew you were acquainted with such a pretty girl! I'm glad to see you're thinking of settling down :D
Herlock: My dear Watson, your astute deductions have saved me many times, but your tendency to jump to conclusions is going to get us into trouble.
Cardia: He called me a 'girl'. He still thinks of me as a person ;_;
More backstory! Aliester/Morairty works for the British Special Intelligence unit Twilight, which is run by Cardia's evil little brother Finis.
Finis is very happy to find out that Cardia is off alone and plausibly miserable while her friends desperately search for her, and orders his people to search for her as well.
Chapter 2: Jack the Ripper
UGH.
So, Herlock is slashy nemeses-who-are-sometimes-allies with Lupin.
Cardia told Herlock to let Lupin and the others know she's safe, so he sent a letter saying "Cardia is in my hands. If you wish to know more, send either Victor Frankenstein or Count Saint-Germain. If anyone follows in secret, I cannot guarantee her safety. Lupin, especially, is forbidden."
BAD HERLOCK.
Cardia: What is this?
Herlock: A witty letter of invitation ^_^
Cardia: More like a ransom note >:(
Saint-Germain: Heh. If you could have seen the group's uproar when this arrived. But I'm glad you're safe. I wish you had chosen to talk to us...but I understand the feeling of wanting to be distant, precisely because a place is warm and gentle. But before I go- not one of us sees you as anything like a monster. You're welcome back at any time, and we'll rush to your side not matter what if you're in danger.
Oh no now I'm having Saint-Germain feels ;_;
The sad irony of Cardia leaving because she sees herself as a monster is that all the others except Lupin see themselves as monsters too. Especially Saint-Germain.
...and then I got bored and stopped. SORRY HERLOCK.
