Bad ends for Kazama Chicage!
I wasn't going to play this in case it hit one of my squicks, then heard it hit another of my squicks and it sounded so bizarre I got curious. SO I MAY REGRET THIS.
(But I didn't! These were varied and interesting and sad enough to be affecting but not, like, sobbing my eyes out awful)
** Spoilers, brief discussion of rape and incest squicks**
Saito bad ends: Saito either decides to cut Chizuru out his life for her own good, or (most commonly) dies horribly thus breaking her heart.
Okita bad ends: Okita either decides to cut Chizuru out of his life because caring about people is for chumps, dies horribly thus breaking her heart, or (most commonly) loses control of his bloodlust and murders her.
So I'm curious about how this will go.
Kazama is capable of breathtaking cruelty so it's like...will he be awful to her? Will something bad happen to him? Will he just go ugh you know what you're too much hassle and abandon her? I don't think it'll be rapey since he only seems to say creepy stuff sort of...on principle because that's what attempted abducters do rather than because he really means it. But it could definitely go there, so I am a bit tense.
Also the spoiler I saw was that the Kyoto Winds goes to a Chizuru/Kaoru place, where Kaoru is her twin brother?? I was too curious not to check it out but I have an incest squick SO. I may be in for a double squick! Sometimes you gotta live life on the edge. Anyway if this is too much for me I am giving myself permission to stop and not do the rest. I wouldn't be surprised if the random internet person was overstating it, this game doesn't seem the sort to go too incesty.
Kyoto Winds:
At this point Kazama and Chizuru have a sort of grudging mutual respect but they don't care about each other a whole lot (well, he might, but she definitely doesn't) Which isn't a great setup for angst but I know better than to underestimate this game.
Oh, they're facing Kaoru and Stabdad, that is a good setup for Chizuru suffering. *tenses*
Kazama: As a demon lord it is my duty to put an punish those who leave the path of righteousness!
Me: You have a weird idea of righteousness then, dude.
So! I alienate Kazama by being ambivalent about being a demon instead of embracing it.
Bad End:
He tells her to go "hide behind a tree or something" instead of protecting her very well.
Kaoru: Chizuru, will you really not join us? It's easy for Kazama to look down on us for making vampires but how else do we create a safe place for our clan?
Chizuru: I understand your reasons, but it's not worth hurting people for.
Kaoru: You are very kind hearted. You have had so many people love you...except me.
Chizuru: what?
Kaoru: *stabs* I have loved you as a brother for so long. If I can't have you in my life, little sister, what choice do I have but to kill you?
THE END
Pfft, incest ending my foot. That's totally normal Kaoru behaviour!
Unrequited Love Ending:
Kazama: Since we are kin, I will make your death quick.
Kaoru: Kin! Where you you when your 'kin' were all murdered? I don't need to justify myself to you!
Kazama: I sympathise with what happened, but I can't let your sins go unpunished.
Chizuru: No!
Kazama: *stabs Kaoru* You're next, stabdad. (using the very impolite form of you, "kisama", which I have started hearing alll over this game now I'm aware of it. It sounds a lot like "Kazama", lol)
Stabdad: Do what you like. You mistake my desire to restore my family for some selfish ambition.
Chizuru: Please, spare my father! *stands in front of him*
Stabdad: It's ok Chizuru. As long as you live, the Yukimura clan continues. But I would pay attention to what principle is being used to punish us.
Kazama (sounding bored): Is that all you have to say? *raises sword*
Me: OH NO HE'S GOING TO ACCIDENTALLY KILL CHIZURU
Kazama: Pfft, what am I, a human? *beheads Stabdad*
Chizuru: *faints*
And then she wakes WITH KIMIGIKU. IN SEN'S VILLAGE.
Sen: Do you want to go outside? It's a lovely day.
Chizuru: Sorry, I'm too sad :(
Hahaha omg he didn't even drop Chizuru at the village, just on a nearby mountain path, where Kimigiku happened to stumble across her. KAZAMA YOU ASS.
Sen: I'm surprised he didn't keep you to be his wife, I guess he felt guilty about what happened.
Me: NOT GUILTY ENOUGH TO WALK AN EXTRA 100M THOUGH.
Chizuru feels like it's too late to catch up to the Shinsengumi, who have moved on from this area.
She asks Sen, as a demon, if her father or Kazama was in the right about the use of the vampire serum according to Demon morality. Sen says cultures between clans differ too much to say, but it was definitely wrong to interfere with human affairs (she doesn't say which of them was more wrong there, they were both pretty bad)
Chizuru wonders if her home village was much like Sen's, and where she will go now that her brother and father are dead.
(STAY HERE AND MARRY SEN. OBVIOUSLY??)
THE END
So, unexpected femslash ending :D By the standards of an otome bad ending, anyway.
LET'S SEE WHERE EDO BLOSSOMS TAKES ME.
Huh! Looks like there's only two! Since he's not a vampire and has no blood drinking related Bad Ends.
So! Chizuru and Kazama are basically in love at this point but too tsundere about each other to admit it. He takes her to Doomed Democracy Island to see the Shinsengumi one last time.
Bad End:
Leave him waiting on the beach and go alone. Into an active warzone. Not...knowing the way? Good choice, Chizuru. And then she stumbles into an Imperial patrol and gets shot, which, yeah. Her last thought is to feel bad for wasting Kazama's time CHIZURU PLEASE.
THE END
Unrequited Love:
So she takes Kazama with her this time! He's so sweet about it I remember why I ship this pairing despite what an ass he is most of the time.
I was thinking the path might continue on as before just not have him kiss her at the end after she's seen the Shinsengumi etc. BUT NO. We instead have a new scene, not in a battlefield or town as usual for this location, but under a cherry blossom tree.
The tree where Hijikata kills Kazama in the Hijikata route.
The ground is littered with bodies. "Looks like Imperials" says Kazama. But she notices that instead of the usual bullet-holes, there's just vicious sword wounds.
Hijikata, in vampire form and covered in blood: Come to join the festivities, Yukimura?
oh nooooo
I...can't believe I'm thinking "Oh no, Hijikata is going to kill Kazama" but here we are. Especially since having seen Okita's bad ends I do not remotely put it past Hijikata to kill Chizuru as well. Maybe I'll just STOP PLAYING HERE and pretend they ALL BECOME FRIENDS AND FORM A SEXY HAPPY TRIAD.
*sighs and presses next*
Kazama asks Hijikata what the point of all this is, since his city will fall regardless. His words are dismissive, but his tone is sad.
Hijikata says he refuses to give up or live under the people who killed Kondou. They draw their swords.
Chiziru: But why do you two have to fight? Do you really have to kill every vampire you meet, Kazama?
Kazama: No. But this man clearly wants to die, who am I to deny him?
She realises it as an act of respect from one samurai to another.
Hijikata and Kazama flirt-fight until both are near the point of death.
Kazama: What an honour for you to die with the kiss of my blade at your neck!
Me: Or you could literally kiss him, that would cause a lot less trouble.
But instead they simultaneously kill each other with one final blow. The war is lost, the city falls, and noone will remember any of this but Chizuru.
She vows to remember it always, and thinks about Kazama being both the Shinsengumi's greatest foe and the embodiment of the ideals they stood for. Which, uh...I did some research on bushido for a fic and he seemed to miss some KEY ASPECTS like COMPASSION and SELF CONTROL but, hey, WHAT DO I KNOW.
*Amagiri and I form a "Saito for bestest Samurai, Kazama for the trash heap" club*
Chizuru closes her eyes, and thinks of Kazama. In her mind's eye, he is smiling.
THE END
Interestingly, I checked and Harada (the other non-vampire love interest) has three extra bad endings, like the vampires do, but just from making random wrong choices. I guess Kazama having less is a holdover from not being a full route in the original version of the game.
I wish there was some easy way to find out which character's bad ends are more interesting. Hit me up if you're reading this and you know! I'm expecting Hijikata to be interesting because he's the default love interest with the most content. Okita and Saito were good because I was writing fic about them but I don't see myself writing any more fic any time soon. Well, except maybe Chizuru/Sen and I'm not playing 56 bad endings on the off chance of more Sen content.
Other than that I guess I'll go through the bad ends one by one every now and then if I feel inspired. I'm not sure I'll ever feel up to Iba's without more information considering how triggering I found his good ending.
