Notes from miscellaneous other Swancon 2012 panels

Gender Norms in Fiction, Animation: It's all the Same Now, What ever happened to the fourth wall?, Lost Girl: Sexy without being sexist

Gender Norms in Fiction:
Always remember: Everyone is the hero of their own story.
Similarities between the idea of fixing asexuality and "everyone needs a honky" stuff like (James Cameron's) Avatar? (I'm still digesting this)
Brandon Sanderson was pretty cool, recommended people check out Racefail (I'm not sure I would, there's some great stuff but it's a bit intimidating to wade through for the uninitiated!)
Poor Elaine was asked questions as a representative of "the Other" (eg queer, even though it was ostensibly a panel on gender) I don't like the idea that some groups are inherently "the Other", especially in a panel on writing women. 50% of the population does not see women as the Other!
Recced: Derailing for Dummies.

Animation: It's all the Same Now:
If you want good feedback on your animation, post it to the Animqtion subreddit
Lindsey Fleay, used to work in the film industry and now teaches at TAFE, was a great panelist, very knowledgeable.
In the US, films are made by large studios, in Europe and Canada by lots of tiny little companies coming together.
But all major films everywhere tend to be made by committee, whether it's private investors or the government. All that changes is the specific crapness they force onto creators :(
Kickstarter and Indies are an alternative
Cosgrove Hall does good stuff

What ever happened to the fourth wall?:
Supernatural fandom hated ALL female characters so much the show not only killed them all off, but retroactively removed them from previous seasons (citation needed? I thought that a lot during this panel fyi, and some "facts" were definitely wrong)
Mass Effect 3 ending DLC created due to fan pressure
Arthur Conan Doyle was irritated by fandom, killed of Sherlock Holmes, was badgered into bringing him back
The whole thing with Derpy Hooves in My Little Pony friendship is Magic.
I don't think I got around to mentioning the way Homestuck fandom's fanon of PM being female and Tavros being in a wheelchair became canon
Runaways fandom didn't let filmmakers get away with making Nico white
Pantomimes all about audience participation
My theory: what we have now is deliberate active feedback instead of passive feedback via polls/focus groups etc.

Lost Girl: Sexy without being sexist:
Trick more maternal compared to Giles as more paternal parental figure?
Bo is not exceptional in a world of otherwise useless women, ALL the female characters are fleshed out and awesome.

Help Program Swancon 2013:
Just want to thank Stephen again for running this, it was great!

Mass Effect 3: What Was With That Ending?
This was at 11pm AND I MADE IT (with the help of some epic naps). It was a great panel, of which I remember very little.
