Fanart, Meta: "Avatar: The Legend of Korra"

You guys all know there's a new season of "Avatar the Last Airbender" called The Legend of Korra starting next year? Yes? No? I'm quite excited. So excited I drew some fanart!

ATLA: Older Mai and Katara
by ~sqbr

The show is set 70 years in the future, and I realised that means lots of positive older ladies, huzzah! (That's the one thing I really would have liked more of in the original show) Assuming they're not all dead :/

Fandom's reaction of course is to argue about what this all says about shipping. Maybe it's because I've been in Dragon Age fandom recently or because I'm married(*) but I don't see "The person you're in love with", "the person you're married to" and "The person you've had children with" as having to be the same person (certainly not for your entire life), even if the show probably will.

BUT ANYWAY, LET US NOT TALK ABOUT SHIPPING.

I'm wondering how Aang is going to make a new Air Nation. I like the idea of him setting up in the Northern Air Temple, with all those refugees creating a new society. I vaguely pondered writing about it (especially since I've already written some stuff about the Northern Air Temple) but then I got all serious business thinky about real world peoples that have created creole cultures after genocide and lost my squee (see also: what happens when I try and write about elven alienages in Dragon Age) Assuming Aang and Katara are together (which I think seems pretty plausible) I wonder how much time she gets to spend helping rebuild the Southern Water Tribe. (I like to imagine she still has ties there, which is why she's wearing Southern Water Tribe clothes in my picture. Plus it was easier than coming up with an Air Nation outfit :D)

I think the relationship between Korra and all of Aang's friends and family (especially Katara) could be interesting, a bit like Dax in Deep Space Nine.

I'm not that excited about the Fire Nation stuff just because I can see it being the same old "rebuilding a nation after war" stuff that comes up in a great many fantasy sequels, but hopefully they'll do something interesting with it. This anti-bender stuff sounds interesting, assuming it's not presented as "those uppity normal people rising against their betters" which I like to think the writers are better than. I've been thinking there's stuff that could be done with the steam-punkish elements of the show and that seems to be the direction they're going in. It could be like an alternate version of the Industrial revolution in an Asia with no Europe (or anywhere else).

...and I'll stop there because I'm going to go see Inception, huzzah!

(*)just kidding honey :)
