Personality: Major spoilers for Persona 2: Innocent Sin
Jun Kurosu is not known for his perfect little childhood. He had his ups and downs, his laughs and cries, but all in together, it was one depressing childhood. In the very end, it shaped how he is now and what his ideals are based on.
Like most children, at a young age, Jun adored his father, Akinari Kashihara, greatly. Kashihara was a teacher at Seven Sisters High school, but always made time to be with his son. He played with him, looked at stars together, read books, all typical things a father and son would do together. He even promised Jun that he would stop smoking, giving him his lighter as proof of doing so. It was this exact lighter than he later gave to his best friend and love interest, Tatsuya Suou.
Tatsuya Suou was a young boy he met in the Araya Shrine during a summer festival. Both had been brought to the shrine to stay while their supervisors went off to see more great sights. It was by chance that the both of them wore masks of the superheros in a popular kids show called Featherman R. Jun was the Black Ranger while Tatsuya was the Red Ranger. Soon, with Jun’s ball, they began to play games with each other. Not much longer, another young boy named Eikichi entered their game with the Blue Ranger mask. Then a girl came along by the name of Lisa with the Yellow Ranger mask to join. And from this one little day at the shrine, the four of them became the best of friends, always wearing their masks so they could always be themselves without having to worry about being judged.
Jun became the unofficial leader of the group of kids, naming it “The Masquerade”. He was always willing to give someone a helping hand and didn’t judge anyone by anything. He didn’t make fun of Eikichi’s clumsiness nor Lisa’s strange hair colour. He didn’t believe that anyone should be judged for that. He believed in fairness by letting the winner of rock-paper-scissors to play the game they wanted for the day, and that everyone should be given a chance. He was a natural born leader, and he treated his friends with kindness for they held a very special place in his heart. He would often run up to the shrine during weekends or after school to play with them, even if he didn’t know what their faces looked like. The only person’s face he knew was Tatsuya’s whom he saw outside of the shrine and was his the closest friend. The two of them did everything together. Jun highly believed that he and Tatsuya were doppelgangers, the same coin but different sides. So he didn’t feel too bad about having to give him the lighter that his father gave him in exchange for the watch that Tatsuya’s own father gave him. After all, it was almost like having it themselves because they were the same person, right? It was also him that decided to protect their big sister, Maya Amano, with Tatsuya.
Maya Amano was only a middle school student when she came to the shrine one day to pray and met up with the Masquerade kids. It was her who taught them how to play “Master Persona” which later lead them to earn one, and how they should always reach for their dreams. This highly inspired Jun who looked up to Maya as a role model and he began to want the same thing, making others realize what their dream was and achieve it. He greatly respected her, and was devastated to hear that she had to leave them to move away. For the first time we see, Jun displayed an act of selfishness by refusing to let her go. In act of this, he locked up Maya in the shrine with the help of Eikichi and Lisa. When Tatsuya started to protest, they locked him up too. They were only going to leave the two of them overnight so they might change their minds, but not everything went according to plan. The next morning when they arrived, they found out the shrine was burned by an arsonist with Maya and Tatsuya no where to be found. Guilt stricken and fearful that they accidentally killed their friends, they hid their masks deep in Mt. Itawo and never played with each other ever again. From there, the Masquerade was split apart.
Just a while before that, there were rumors starting to spread around that Jun’s father was a slob, a good-for-nothing. How dare was he married to Junko Kurosu, a famous actor and Jun’s mother, when he did nothing but bum around. Everyone was speaking about Kashihara over the city and the other children at school began to make fun of Jun, calling him the son of the worthless man. No matter how much he did love his father, he couldn’t help but hate what he was now being called. So no sooner, he began to become ashamed and embarrassed by Kashihara. He claimed that the man that actually came to pick him up was really his uncle or a friend. He didn’t want anyone to know who his father really was, no matter how actually great he was. He had even lied to his friends about it. Then after the Masquerade was disbanded, Kashihara fell to his death in the clock tower of Seven Sisters High School, being crushed by the gears. It couldn’t have happened in a much worse time for Jun. With the guilt that he might have accidentally killed his best friend along with his role model, combined with the sudden death of his father and his mother beginning to ignore him, he started to spiral down.
Nyarlathotep saw this and took advantage of the him, taking on the form of the late Kashihara, but only everything that Jun wanted. Being only a young child of seven years, he was easily fooled and his memories were beginning to fog. Nyarlathotep made him believe that it actually wasn’t partly his fault that Maya and Tatsuya were locked up and killed (when they were really safe), and that it was actually Tatsuya, Lisa, and Eikichi that locked up Maya to be killed intentionally. He soon began to resent his former friends and started to hold a grudge against them. He started to distance himself away from others, no longer being that social boy as a child, and he lost that kind demeanor. He started to use his Persona abilities to harm others that dared to pick on him during his teen years, nearly killing them and because of that, he was transferred over to Kasugayama High School, a school for delinquents. He was known around the school as a frail, pretty boy that was a complete mystery as he was never around. The reason why he was never in classes was because around this same time he became the “JOKER”, someone that appeared and granted people’s dreams if you called your own cell phone number. However, it was a coy to steal the souls and dreams of those foolish people and collect them to have enough power to create a new world, a world that the real Kashihara wrote about only to realize what damage it could do. Nyarlathotep twisted around this world vision to Jun who believed that it would bring peace at last. So he tried his best to complete it. Although the way he was handling it, he truly did want a world where everyone could leave happily. Even if he was spiteful and drawn back, he still had that kindness beneath it all.
It was only after another series of event where the former members of the Masquerade (Tatsuya, Eikichi, Lisa, and Maya) had helped him realize his wrongs by a long battle and getting rid of the Nyarlathotep that posed as both Kashihara and Jun’s persona. From then on, Jun realized that his memories were false and that what he was doing was ultimately wrong, almost being in some kind of trance as if something took over him for the first thing he asked when he woke up after the battle if he was in a nightmare this whole time, the whole past ten years. It was there he began to deeply regret doing all the things he did for the past ten years and felt like all the events that were happening were his fault. It is something he cannot get over and it haunts him, but he takes responsibility by not just moping around. He vowed to do the right to his wrongs and that he would no longer hide under a mask or another name. “My name is... is Kurosu... Jun Kurosu! I will go by no other name any longer!!” And from there, he reverted back to his kind natured self when he was a child.
Jun was almost no different as he was as ten years ago; he was still kind, willing to give others a chance, believed in fairness, and most of all, he wanted others to realize their dream and achieve it. With the little push he needed from Maya, he taught a small group of kids “Master Persona” and promised a boy that they’ll save his parents, no matter what. From there, he took on a bit of a older sibling role, just as Maya did years ago. That was what he wanted to do, spread dreams around, and even though he was no longer the leader of his group of friends, the role being passed to Tatsuya-- his doppelganger --he was still there, giving a few words of encouragement. Although he won’t be shouting out cheers like Lisa or rocking out in a bang like Eikichi, he says his words with a smile.
However, the past ten years did indeed harden him. He can be harsher in his words when he is ticked off. He isn’t afraid to show off his anger and he will resort to cursing. He will insult those he hates such as to his “father” (who he still had not realized was Nyarlathotep), screaming “where is that piece of shit?!” at one point in the game, demanding answers. Deceive him and you will receive his anger in full blown. He is also more prone to scowling than he did as a child, but it is still a rare sight. It is normally when someone insults his friends that he gets angry, but his positive traits of his personality always out weights his negative traits.
Although he might have gone through a lifetime of hardships and he is only the young age of seventeen, Jun managed to pull himself together into a stronger person than he was before. Just like his horoscope, the Aquarius, he is patient, honest in his opinions, and can normally see the two different sides of an argument instead of just sticking to one side. No matter what might be thrown at him, he will always find a way to get over it, never wanting to fall back into that dark phase he had for ten long years, and once he had made friends with someone and loves them in either platonic or romantic, he will stick by their sides to the very end. He is willing to sacrifice everything for them, such as his memories to save Maya, but that’s another story for another time.
Strengths:
» Natural Leader: Shown early in Jun’s childhood, he has the ability to become a leader by encouraging others and having all the traits a leader should have. He gives others a chance and he doesn’t judge by appearances nor anyone straight off the bat. He gives them a chance and sees it from there. He believes in fairness and is patient, even when he was the JOKER. No matter what time he was in his life, he is and will always be a leader, even if Tatsuya takes over for him.
» Intelligent: Although Jun attends a juvenile high school, he is actually very smart. He can get good grades in his classes, if he ever attended them. He can figure out problems a bit faster than others and even if he didn’t study much, he did well in the material in his classes. If he also didn’t become a juvenile delinquent and perhaps lived a bit closer, he would have attended Seven Sisters High School instead.
» Hanakotoba: One of Jun’s most favorite hobbies and wide knowledge is hanakotoba, other known as Japanese flower language. He knows a wide variety of flowers and what they all mean. He gives flowers out to express his emotions at times and for special occasions. He always carries at least one flower in his breast pocket to smell and twirl in his hands. Just a bit of a warning though, while Tatsuya used swords to kill demons, Lisa used her fists, Maya and Eikichi used guns, Jun used flowers to kill demons. He knows how to aim those flowers very well and how to injury people with them. Guess his great knowledge about them wasn’t the only thing.
» Horoscopes: Just like Hanakotoba, the seventeen year old is greatly knowledgeable horoscopes. He could tell someone what their traits are from them and how to “predict” the future with them. He looks up at the stars and tries to find the horoscopes from there. Although both horoscopes and hanakotoba are concerned a very feminine activities, Jun greatly enjoys them and can tell you a lot about them.
» Loyal: A trait that is shared with most other Aquarius people is that they are extremely loyal to their friends. Jun fits this to the T and he will be willing to do anything to protect them. Because he no longer has any family members, his friends and Tatsuya are all he has left. He will be willing to die for them and give up everything just to make sure they were safe.
» Helps other to achieve their dreams: This was originally Maya’s trait, but it inspired enough for Jun that he soon learned to take it as his own as well. His own dream is to help others realize theirs, whenever it is to become a successful person, filled with happiness, meet a certain someone, or just about anything. He tries to draw that out of a person and have them grasp it. From there, he encourages them to go and achieve it with his little words. He might not cheer by screaming, but he’ll try his best, even if he’s a little awkward.
Weaknesses:
» Spacey: Although he doesn’t seem like it, he does space out a bit. He sometimes goes on mumbling horoscopes and hanakotoba (Japanese flower language). He can zone out to things going on around him when thinking about his own little things. Although he isn’t a big spacer, he is only a bit.
» Frail: The main reason why Jun was feared in Kasugayama High School was because he could badly injury people with his Persona. However, when you take that away, you have a skinny pretty boy that probably couldn’t really hold a fight. He does have some strength, but probably not enough to go swing a sword everywhere like Tatsuya did. He can hurt others with throwing flowers, but that normally doesn’t help in a fist fight. Doesn’t really quite help that he’s not very athletic as well, so he wouldn’t be able to make a run for it easily either.
» His Past: The past ten years behind Jun haunts him greatly. There is almost not one day that goes by without him thinking about it. He feels extremely guilty everything he had down in that decade and regrets everything. He wishes that he can undo all that and he doesn’t expect anyone to like him after finding out what he did. Although he is trying to make up for it, he still doesn’t feel as if he deserves a lot of things, nor that people should like him. It is something that just drags him down and one of the main things he thinks about to get him so depressed. It is best not to bring it up at all.

[A video feed starts up with the bright blue sky! Just look at those clouds! They look quite nice, don’t they? Oh wait, the camera shakes around for a bit and then, hey, it lands on a person! Someone very feminine looking, but lets not focus on that, okay? This newcomer seems confused like most newcomers do.]
That was hard. Tatsuya probably knows how to work this better...
[The camera stays steady for the first time of this whole feed and the male on the screen is fiddling with a small blue flower in his hand, a nemophila for those with knowledge about flowers.]
Hello. My name is Jun Kurosu. I’m....I’m a bit lost right now. This is definitely not where I’m supposed to be, waking in someone else’s room and meeting my....”mother”...
[A “mother” that he scowled at for claiming such a thing before being kicked out. He frowns just thinking about that woman.]
Anyway...I need to go back to...Japan, I guess...so if someone can just point out the way, that’ll be great. I can’t stay here too long.
[He looks around, worry stricken on his face. He fiddles around with the flower a bit more.]
If anyone also sees a woman with shoulder length hair named Maya or someone my age but with short brown hair in an uniform and answers to Tatsuya, can you please tell me? That’ll be nice as well. I really hope we weren’t split up again... I had enough of walls closing in on me...
...Thank you...

He wasn’t really fit for this. What was he even doing here? Those were the first thoughts that ran through his mind, leaning against a tree.
Jun never really did do very good in phys ed. class. Heck, he rarely attended it nowadays, skipping classes in high school. He was a little better in elementary school, having all the energy in the world, but no matter what, he could never run as fast as the other boys or climb to the top of the rope properly. He always was more of the type to look through his telescope at the stars or read his favorite book, The Little Prince. So placing him in the neck of the woods was probably not the best idea.
His little Oddish twirled around his feet while he tried to catch his breath and just figure out everything around here. Alright, so apparently, he was no longer in Xibala, but in another world called “Johto” and he had to become “the very best”...Okay...he didn’t really understand all that, but from what at least he knew for sure was that he needed to head to the next city. That last one had little to nothing in it and everyone was nagging at him to go. Might as well do what they say and head off, right? Beats saying in one place, but this was ridiculous. He wasn’t going to do very well out here.
Out of habit, he started to fiddle with the watch on his wrist, that same watch that Tatsuya gave to him years ago. It was a miracle that it kept working for all these years. A watch’s batteries weren’t supposed to last ten years and keep on ticking, but somehow, it did. Tatsuya’s watch just stayed alive with him all this time, and he was grateful for it. Trapped in a new world suddenly and without his friends, it was worrying to say the least. The comfort of something familiar was nice and the watch always did the trick. That didn’t mean he wasn’t concerned about Maya-neesan, Lisa, Michelle, or Tatsuya though. That and the fact he couldn’t feel his Persona, Chronos, nor any of his others Personae. It was nerve-wreaking to say the least.
His Oddish twirled around his feet once again and nudged them. He looked down at it and gave it a small smile. “Yeah, let’s get a move on. Tatsuya’s waiting.”
Looking down at his watch once again, he pushed himself off the tree and began to follow his little Pokemon hopping around. Until then, he’ll just have to tough this travel out. Even if he wasn’t fit enough for this.
