We seem to have picked a fairly bad time to come to DC; there were more floods and heavy rainstorms last night. A fair percentage of the museums are shut, thanks to the weather, so we decided to do more shopping (clothes etc for home) today rather than head into town proper. The forecast is that the next few days should see the rain tapering off, so hopefully we'll finally get chance to see some of what DC has to offer.
From what we've seen so far, we're really taken with the city, however. It's very green, and the buildings have a feeling of age (and gravitas) to them which has been missing almost everywhere else we've been in the US. There's also a lot more culture (and for that matter, counter-culture) going on here than we'd expected.
We've spent a really enjoyable evening up at Matt and Shannon's tonight; I was given the run of their kitchen to knock up some food, which was marvellous; we ate downstairs, and then watched a selection of comedy that they'd got on their Tivo. It was a really relaxing and enjoyable way to spend a night; just being in a home again was a real taste of what we're looking forward to about getting back. Sharing food and drinks with friends is something really special, and not something I suspect we'll ever take for granted again.
