chanukah drabble one: But also the Lights

Dec 09, 2012 19:25

This year I will attempt to do a series of drabbles for each night of Chanukah (The first of which was...actually last night, so I'm one day behind.  Today was the first full day, though.)

Title: But also the Lights
Source: LotR, appendices
Characters: Ivorwen, Gilraen, Li'l Aragorn
Rating: General
Summary: The duties of the Lady, at home and away.

In the Angle, her mother placed a single taper on the window-ledge, saying: we keep the hearths, yes, but also the lights.  The child reached a finger towards the orange flicker, then drew it back.  She continued: Flame with little warmth serves its purpose, yet; a signal to the darkness of the world that we can still strike flint.  That we’ve lived to see another season, to shepherd home those who would return.

And those who would not.

Far from home, she lights a candle to set in the window, tells her son: let it burn down on its own.

Notes:
That we've lived to see another season is loosely based on the text of the Shehecheyanu, traditionally recited on the first night of Chanukah, among many other occasions.  It is also traditional to let Chanukah candles burn down without extinguishing the flames.

If anyone has any drabble ideas that relate to the theme of light, particularly in times of conflict or the aftermath of battle, please hit me so that I can finish this series.  (Alternately, we can also play the game of, How Many Ardaverse Cultures Can Aliana Make Appear Vaguely Jewish?  I've already got Valacar saying the Mourner's Kaddish in Fallen.  Fun!)
