Y: The Last Man

Oct 24, 2008 05:05

I finished the Y: The Last Man series by Brian K. Vaughan. I have read good comics before, I have read really good comics before, but there has never been a piece of art so masterfully done as this before. It entirely deserved its win of Best Comic Series at this Year’s Scream awards. I never thought I would cry so much over a comic book, but I couldn’t see the pages through my tears. Any comic book fan yet to read this series is simply an idiot. Not only does it live up to all the hype surrounding it, but far exceed it.  I read Walking Dead 49(?) and didn’t shed a tear. Nothing happens in Y:TLM for the sake of shock value, it’s just purely amazing, and quite heart wrenching, writing.
And the artwork was astounding. Pia Guerra is a genius with a pen (or whatever medium she uses). Apart from putting Yorick Brown and his sister Hero firmly near the top of my ‘comic book characters I want to shag’ list, she captivates and draws the reader in so seamlessly.
There is no way the movie will ever be able to do this series justice. But I am incredibly happy that I found it and read it. It is, and will probably remain, my favorite comic book series of all time.
