Went to see Rocky Horror Show for the first time in several years, and the first time in Australia. It was an... interesting... experience.
Melbourne theatre crowds are the most boring you'll meet! I counted two people in costume in the whole (sold out) audience! (I was 'half dressed - fishnets, short skirt, heels, glitter - as I wasn't sure if it was the 'done thing' to dress up!).
No one shouted anything.
No one sang along with the songs.
No one clapped along to the songs.
No one got up to timewarp, except at the end.
The show itself was quite disappointing too. It was over very quickly (first half was only 40 mins long!). The guy playing Frank was an ok singer, but couldn't act - he turned everything into a music concert, and when Riff Raff came to shoot him at the end, I was thinking 'get on with it!', which is very unlike me as Frank is usually my favourite character :(
Columbia was pretty good, but very obviously couldn't tap dance, which was a bit of a let down after the amazing Columbia I was used to in the UK shows.
Brad and Janet weren't bad, though there was something missing there too. We barely got to see Magenta or Riff, so it's hard to comment on them. Oh, and Eddie seemed to want to get through 'Hot Patootie' in the shortest time possible.
We'll go again, to a Friday night showing, which is apparently more the 'fan' night, but I'm not holding out a lot of hope for major improvements... :(
Overall, a bit of a let down. I'd give it maybe 2 stars out of 5. It needs a lot more character and energy, and it was lacking a lot of the 'cleverness' of the UK show. Oh, and having a loud (deliberate) explosion right in the middle of 'Don't dream it' was just stupid. The one emotional part of the show that Frank didn't ruin...
Oh well...
