Good news for Hong Kongers who use minibuses, a.k.a. suicide buses: any new minibus going into service from 2010 will be equipped with speed governors.
This comes in response to the latest crash in which the driver and three passengers were killed after the speeding bus slammed into the back of a slow-moving container truck. The newspapers were filled with images of gore and carnage that spurred the Transport Department into action.
But that doesn't guarantee older vehicles will be fitted with the devices quickly: some minibuses are still running around without seat belts, and speed isn't the sole reason people get injured or killed.
Suicide buses won't lose their nickname for a long, long time.
