Alice watched the sun set from the small hill on the west lawn. Her arms wrapped around herself, she smiled as the first stars began to make themselves visable in the fading light.
She lay back staring up at the vastness of the sky and wondered not for the first time, just what exactly was out there. She hoped there was something more.
She had been minding her own business that afternoon at lunch, when an owl unexpectantly dropped a letter on her tray. She pulled it out of the horseradish sauce and gave it a bit of a frown before wiping it on her napkin. The owl had looked extremely flustered and Alice felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand up as if something very bad was about to happen. Very bad in deed.
She had pulled the letter open with shaky hands.
My dearest Alice,
I am writting to tell you that Mum is quite ill, she had been moved to St. Mungos and we are not sure if she will be coming home. I will be at Hogwarts tomorrow to fetch you.
Love,
Dad
The day had been nothing more than a blur, she hadn't told anyone what the letter had said, and had been too numb to really react. Now laying outside she felt hot tears begin to build, but she forced them away.
More stars shined as the night around her got deeper.
