Lullaby Remembered- RP

It was two in the morning… or at least that’s what time it was the last time he checked his clock… Now whether that was seconds, minutes… or even hours ago… he wasn’t sure. All he knew was that he couldn’t sleep. When he had gone to bed earlier, he noticed how dark the sky was. He noticed how the ominous dark purple clouds were looming over them, a huge stretch of them, with no end in sight. He knew a storm would be coming soon, so when he woke up about an hour or two later from his uneasy sleep, he wasn’t entirely surprised.  He was secretly afraid of thunderstorms... Always had been, always would be...

Though the storm had been going on for awhile now, it didn’t seem to be letting up at all. Rain pounded down on the roof like bullets, and lightning flashed across the sky. But the worst part was the thunder that came when you were least expecting it...
Suddenly, another crash of thunder came that seemed to shake the entire house. This made Alfred jump a little, his heart skipping a beat before drawing in a huge breath of air. He shut his eyes tightly and held onto his pillow for dear life as he burrowed further under the covers. If he could just block out all the noise, then maybe, just maybe he could go back to sleep.

‘I can tough this out,’ he told himself. ‘It’ll pass… It’ll pass…” He shuddered as he heard yet another “explosion” some from outside. This one was so loud, he couldn’t help but let out a small yelp before clamping a hand over his mouth. He didn’t want to wake up the whole house. But as he lay there in the dark, completely hidden under the covers, he couldn’t help but think that maybe there was one person he wanted to wake up right now… Matthew. He was the one person who was able to get him through situations like these. When they were younger, he would slip into his brother’s bedroom and crawl into bed with him. And no matter how quiet he tried to be, Matthew always woke up anyway… He would never be mad about it either… He would hold him close and tell him softly not to worry, and sometimes, he would even sing to him until the two of them were fast asleep again.

Someone to sleep next to… He needed that. If he could just remember how to move again, he could go down the hall, and…

‘And what?’ he asked himself. ‘Mattie has Lars now; they share a bed… That would be awkward going in there. You can’t…” He’d just have to get through this storm some other way… He needed to hear someone else’s voice… He needed not to be alone in the dark. Maybe he could go downstairs and turn on the TV? Sleep on the couch? Yeah. That sounded good… Slowly, he slid out from under the covers and made his way downstairs, navigating through the pitch black hallway. He still clutched tightly onto his pillow. He would be taking that with him!

Once he reached the bottom of the stairs, he noticed that there was a light on in the kitchen. Was somebody else up too? Could somebody else also not sleep? As selfish as it was, he hoped he was right…
