Ive been toying with the idea of running some kind of philosophy workshop over new years and Im wondering who would be interested and also any suggestions for discussion or areas you would like to explore. I was thinking of perhaps a hour or a hour and a half so we can cover something with some detail, but not too many topics.
The first thing I considered was some kind of intro to critical thinking (aka the practical study of argument). I keep saying that this is something that should be taught to kids and isnt as hard or esoteric as many people think, so I figured I should actually see if I can teach you guys something new. For this I thought I would only give a quick overview of the basics (as it would take too much time) and focus primarily on fallacies ie (from wiki) "incorrect argumentation in reasoning resulting in a misconception or presumption".
The other area I thought would be interesting to tackle would be ethics, specifically exploring times when our ethics seem inconsistent. This would be a lot harder for me, and I would probably end up getting most of it from other peoples lectures (ie ripping it off) but I figured it might seem less abstract than critical thinking. [ED: on review ethics is too complex]
