I gave my Major Review Seminar (first year) for my Ph.D. today. My topic has now settled down (approximately) to "something in Oka theory" (complex geometry); if you really want to know the gory details, go to
http://www.ams.org/notices/201001/index.html and download the article "What is an Oka manifold" (written by one of my supervisors).
Anyway, it seems that I passed, and they'll let me stay at the university for another year or two. If you accept the fiction that PhDs take three years, then I'm a third of the way through. Or something.
Still managing to do an hour or two of piano practice most days; now the review is out of the way, I can start to think about when my next concert should be (most likely November).
