Closing Night was full of beauty. It felt odd arriving at the school so early for our last show. A matinee always goofs me up a little bit. It just feels unnatural to do a show in the afternoon. Evening is the time for theater people. Circle before the show went well. I got to say about half of the speech that I had imagined but got a big positive response in the middle and I lost the rest of it.
We were all rather subdued during "Tradition" but we had such a big and hungry audience that they called forth more out of us. It was the biggest crowd of the entire run. In scene two I gave a really good rendition of "If I were a Rich Man" thanks to the strength of the audience.
In scene four I made a mistake with the lyrics during "To Life" and sang a verse fromt the end of the song at the beginning. Tom, playing Lazar Wolf, saw that I was off, and knew that I was off, but as he told me later, he decided to trust me and follow me lead. I feel that it was that trust helped me to think ahead and pop back into the correct lyrics at the next opportunity. And he followed me back to the correct lyrics and the song went on. Later we found out that my mistake passed completely under the radar for people in the audience because we successfully made it seem natural. Tom was quite impressed and glad that we had that kind of experience during the show. He told me that my rapid and successful repair took his regard for me to a whole new level.
The rest of the show passed very smoothly for me. We had many difficulties with our large set pieces but we had our worst that time, but the actors did not know about it until after the show. The set piece for the train station got massively entangled in a a stage apron, and it got shredded.
After the show we made our way over to the Englewood Rec Center for our cast party. I won the MVP award for being an actor who offering the most support for the play.
I am glad that I decided to start doing research about leadership while working on this play because it helped me a lot to lift the spirits of the actors during practice. I have used leadership skills in the plays where I had being roles for a long time, but it was instinct and not planned. This time I was able to do more planned stuff and be more effective at helping to created the positive changes I wanted to see. It was a very good learning experience for me.
I am thankful for all of the excellent opportunities that this play gave me.
