It's a three day weekend because of Columbus Day! So lovely...
Um, what else? I saw The Social Network last night which is really excellent. Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg is brilliant if unlikable and unknowable, but it was Andrew Garfield as Eduardo Saverin who really got me. As portrayed in the film, he's perhaps he's too cautious, perhaps unimaginative, and perhaps to blame for all his troubles, but on the other hand, he's so likable, so human, that I'm having trouble getting over him. As a character study, both performances are brilliant. On the other hand, I didn't really like the Winkelvoss twins- I couldn't tell if they were supposed to be tragic heroes or comic villains. I've seen pictures of the real Winklevoss twins on Gawker and for sure, in real life they aren't pretty like they were in the movie, they're scary Nazi dochebags.
[Perhaps I liked Eduardo so much as I've been watching the Red Riding trilogy, which Andrew Garfield is also in.]
And finally Re: Liverpool- We've been so through much before that I'm having trouble getting worked up about anything currently going on- whatever happens, happens. I hope that Hicks loses in court and that the sale goes through before we get handed any points deduction, as my guess is that these owners would run us as a Spurs/ Arsenal fiscal responsibility model and that's much preferable to a Chelsea/ Man City sugar daddy. It seems absurd to have to say this, but the other benefit to American owners is that you probably don't have to worry about human rights violations, the way you have had to with so many other prem owners (the current and previous Man City owners, Arsenal's Uzbek billionaire, even Abramovich to some extent).
As a club, we have the history, but not the right to permanent success- no club does, we have to earn it. I was glad we lost to Blackpool, as they deserved the win, and all of our wretchedness needed to be laid bare. I wonder if there is some dressing room problem, it's not obvious that the players are up for it, or even that they like each other. My guess is that ultimately- for his benefit, for our benefit- Rafa had to leave, but so far, perhaps predictibly, the team has gotten worse, not better.
