OK, so, Animal fucking Collective. I might hate Tumblr more than them, what a mess of a platform that is - how the hell you all keep track of what anyone's saying I've no idea. Hence, posting this here.

Noticed a certain...entitlement on the part of the AC defenders. Maura, as ever, has nailed what's so obnoxious and grating about their reactions:

I'm merely pointing out that I don't get it, and that the idea that this song is an inviolate addition to whatever canon comes out of 2009 isn't shared by every person out there who writes about music...[There is a] particular demographic sweet spot that is eating up AnCo, which is kind of overrepresented online when compared to the rest of the world out there.

^^^^^^^^^Can we just c/p these two points into every AC discussion from now on?

It seems to have gone in one ear and out the other though. In the very next comment, "scott pgwp" says:

I never really got into Pavement or Sebadoh in the 90s, but there they are in the canon. Animal Collective will be there too.

And elsewhere, Perpetua:

The record is a big deal, just fucking get used to it cos it's not going away.

No, it fucking won't be "canon" (not so much that I have to care, anyway), and no, it fucking isn't a big deal. Why do Pitchfork indieists assume that they're the centre of the critical universe, and pretend that people who don't buy into that aesthetic don't exist? AC will be indie canon, obviously, but that is a TINY TINY PART of the world of popular music. Unless they somehow manage a crossover hit, no one else will give a fuck.

AC - thankfully - aren't even that big a deal among UK indie critics - I was expecting talk about them to be far more ubiquitous this year, and happily it wasn't. Most music critics I know either dislike them, or don't care enough either way to have expressed an opinion.

It's funny how people laugh at Cassie for her failed career - with reason - but her worldwide hit "Me & U" is already far more of a big deal in the actual real world than anything AC have released.
