The week of
Memorial Day, I spent a day on I-70 and another for in Columbus, Ohio. I helped my mom move home, and I visited with my dad and both my siblings. I also got to do lots of important stuff like eat grilled food every night, get my haircut (I am too lazy to find a new salon), bike in the old neighborhood, buy cat food, drop by my high school, and play with my dog. Actually, the dog came with us pretty much everywhere for two days. Mom and I took turns walking him around Grandview while we got haircuts, and we picked a place to meet the sibs for lunch based on who had outdoor seating.
Anyway, I took some pictures along the way.
I've driven through St. Louis twice, but both times on the outerbelt, so I could only see the Arch from far away. Sine it was Sunday morning, we drove straight through downtown, where you can see the Gateway Arch up close and personal from I-70. Did you know that the Gateway Arch is actually called the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial? I can't imagine why that name didn't catch on...
Vandalia is the former capital of Illinois, and holds some sort of association with Abraham Lincoln. Since we couldn't have pie, Mom and I thought Vandalia might be a fun small town in which to find a cool place to eat. That plan failed big time. The only restaurant we could find looked like it had been completely destroyed by a fire at some point. But even though we didn't get breakfast, we did get to see the old statehouse, a pioneer statue, and Lincoln's face painted on a wall. I may have made Mom circle the block so I could get this picture.
There's this big blue arch when you enter Ohio. I'm not sure why. There's "So much to Discover!" in Ohio. For instance, road construction and corn fields.
This is Murray. He's a lab-greyhound mix (we think), and he's pretty much the most adorable thing ever. :D You have no idea how hard it was getting him to actually look at the camera.
We took Murray for a big walk through Whetstone Park and the Park of Roses. It's been cooler than usual in Columbus this year, so many of the roses weren't blooming yet. Fortunately, there's a section in the back of the park with older rose varieties, and many of those had already bloomed. I thought these pink one's were very pretty.
And here're Murray and me in front of some more pretty roses. He was even good for the camera again! (But I suspect by this point he was just getting tired.)
And finally, another rose picture. I mostly was being a dork and trying to be artsy. And I really wanted to get a bee in the picture.
