I've posted this before. I think I need to post it again.
Right now, I just want everyone to watch a movie called "An Inconvenient Truth"
It's a documentary by Al Gore. Honestly, I think they should show it in schools.
& have tests on it to make sure everyone was paying attention.
It's a very big wake up call, and it's very much needed.
Right now there is a hole in the ozone layer that is larger than North America.
For some of you who may not completely understand what an ozone layer is,
it's the Earth's atmosphere. It acts as a shield. It allows certain amounts of sunlight into our atmosphere
& reflects certain amounts out. It stabilizes the Earth's temperature.
It's made up of a substance called CO2, or Carbon Dioxide.
CO2 is produced by our lungs, our car's exhaust systems, power plants, etc.
It's absorbed by plants. Life is a system of balance.
Too much Carbon Dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere creates a green house effect.. like on planet Venus.
You may already know that our planet is experiencing Global Warming.
Everyone might think, "Yeah, Global Warming. Summer all year around."
No. Global warming is a serious matter that is effecting our lives.
It's not something that we can say, "Oh well, I won't be alive for it to effect me, so I don't have to worry."
At the rate our generation is destroying the Earth, it will effect us. It already is.
The icecaps ont op of Greenland and at the polar caps of the Earth have already begun to melt away at an alarming rate.
If it continues at this rate, it may be completely gone within centuries.
If it continues to increase, it may be within decades.
Ice caps melting, what does that mean?
That means a rise in sea level. If the ice cap on top of Greenland melts, that's a 20 ft increase.
If the ice cap in West Antarctica melts, that's a 20 ft increase.
At the rate we're going, both are melting.
Both? Well, that's 40 ft increase of sea level.
The average human is maybe 5 1/2 ft.. so you're talking about 7 1/4 people high.
That, my friend, is A LOT of water.
Florida would have to be evacuated, Louisiana, Mississippi, parts of China, major cities throughout Europe.
When Hurricane Katrina happened and New Orleans needed to be abandoned, a couple hundred thousand people had to leave.
The pandemonium that was caused by evacuating a hundred thousand people was ridiculous.
Now imagine what would happen when hundreds of millions of people need to be evacuated.
By the Earth heating, animals are becoming endangered.
Polar animals, such as penguins, polar bears, sea lions, and many other creatures are losing their homes.
Humans are causing global warming, therefore, indirectly, we're also killing these animals, and ourselves.
This IS NOT a problem that CANNOT be fixed.
With the right care & the right steps, global warming can be reduced.
If not, well, the entire human race will end up wiping itself out.
& there will be another ice age.
How does global warming cause an ice age?
When the ice caps melt, the water produced is still cold, & it flows into the Atlantic current.
The currents of our oceans are responsible for wind currents & precipitation.
Eventually, there comes cold winds, freezing rain, & hello ice age.
Except this time, Mammoth's aren't running to the equator, humans are.
BUT WAIT! we can't get there because it's all under water. goodbye, human race.
If we act now, within 60 years we can get the hole back to the size it was in the 80's.
It might not seem that good. 60 years to repair 20 years of damage.
It's a start. & that's all we can ask.
What can YOU do to help?
It's quite simple actually.
Unplug things when you're done using them.
Shut off the lights when you leave a room.
Quit smoking.
Plant trees, or flowers. (they look pretty AND they absorb CO2)
Take shorter showers with a lower temperature water.
Buy hybrid cars.
If you need to go somewhere within a short distance, walk or ride a bike.
If you're going somewhere far, car pool, or take a bus.
You'll see a lot of what you can do to save the Earth, benefits you also.
So set an example, and spread the word.
If you can get even ONE person to be more conscious of what they're doing, it was a success.
Most importantly, just watch the movie.
Al Gore knows a lot more about this than I do.
Even if I didn't convince you to be more concerned,
even if you don't care enough to be concerned,
I ask you, please, watch it. You won't regret it.
