Mixed queer party

Yesterday (well Saturday night) I went to a mixed queer party. It's called "Kitty".

It is being held in my town and is bi-monthly. I had never been there. I was curious. It was at a location I had never been in. I wanted to see what people would go there and how they would dress and what music they would play and how people would dance. And I might meet people and talk, but I did not count on it. I am much too shy. I have enough courage to go somewhere on my own, but not enough to approach people who are there.

As it was I hardly talked to anybody there. It was still warm at night, so I came by bike without even wearing a summer coat. The first thing I did when I arrived was ordering a tequila. An alcoholic drink with no carbohydrates of which even a cheap version is drinkable. The drinks were relatively cheap. After that I decided to stick to non-alcoholic drinks. It was warm, I was sweating even without dancing. I did not want to dehydrate, so I needed to drink non-dehydrating drinks, because I certainly wanted to dance there. The second thing I did was buy a t-shirt of the event. Two attractive girls/women were selling them. They let me take the t-shirt to the loo to try it on and see if it fits. I left my tequila with them. Who does not want a black t-shirt with a white face of cat above two white crossed bones against a red shield and red flames captioned 'Alternative Queer Disco, since 2002' and 'entitled "Kitty"' ? One girl was wearing black shorts and a kind of lower body chain bondage. She wore a black glittering skimpy, tight top with one piece of small chain over it. Her tight belly was exposed. She also wore make-up, but that did not attract your attention as much. She was looking attractive (if you're into gothic and similar) and she knew it (but not in a bad way). She also looked young (which in my book is not positive; I prefer people my own age). The girls/women asked whether I was going to wear the t-shirt right away, but I didn't want to. At home I realised why. The t-shirt smelt a lot of cigarette smoke; I want to wash it first.

There was no cloak-room. That was a bit disappointing. Now I had to guard my belongings all the time. I had a black back-pack. The people were mixed in appearance. I had dressed a bit alto, in black and dark purple. I did not stand out in any way (fortunately). There were goths around, but they were a minority. There were women who looked the way dykes look like in The Netherlands, but they were a minority too. The average hair length was way too long for the lesbian scene. Half of the people were men. Mostly I tend to ignore men in a man-woman mixed environment; I am interested in women, not in men. People were in groups. I spent some time observing the groups. People mostly drank beer. Interestingly, as a group they were not very tall, meaning that on average people were my age. I had not expected that, I thought the audience would be younger. There were women wearing skirts. People wore various footwear; army boots, gothic boots, trainers, sandals, slippers.

They played a mix of music. Some of the songs I recognised from gothic dance parties. Some were pop music oldies, but from a certain segment (dark wave, rock, metal). Some I did not recognise at all: probably trance or house. I found most songs good to dance on. But when it comes to dancing I don't discriminate very much; I will dance to almost anything. There was not much space on the dance floor, but you could find some space. The dance floor was not very large. I suppose that the right amount of people had come to this party for the amount of space available. One guy caught my attention, because he was a good dancer. He danced on his own, but also with another guy. The good thing was that I saw women dancing with women, men with men, men and women, and larger groups. So in that sense it was bi-inclusive. It is always good to find such a place. They're not that common.

At some point I was at the side of the bar. I was curious after the clippings which were hanging at the wall. Next to me a guy was complaining because he was not being served by the people tending bar. He sounded drunk. I thought he was unreasonable. He was at one side of the bar. It is very easy to miss one side of the bar, especially when you are not the only one who is serving. It was the side which was more difficult to reach. I know from my own experience in serving drinks how easily you can cover only a part and not distribute your attention fairly. Unfortunately, the guy felt compelled to strike up a conversation with me. I was not interested in talking with him at all. I gave mono-syllabic answers hoping he would notice my lack of interest. Fortunately, he only made a few attempts.

From where I sat I could read a notice at the entrance of the place. It was written in English. Amazing that even in a country where the official language is Dutch, you can encounter English text. The place is called "ACU". I cite the original text here. I am aware of the mistakes in English it contains:

Don'ts in the ACU

Sexual intimidations
Homofobic behaviour
Racist behaviour
Aggresive behaviour
Using or selling hard drugs
Eating meat
Stealing from eachother

Respect it or leave it!

One of the persons tending bar was wearing a black t-shirt with white text. It had three tick boxes, "Male", "Female" and "Other". The "Other" tick box was ticked off. I felt like walking up to her/him and saying I like the t-shirt and asking where did she/he get it, but I didn't. She/he looked slightly ambiguous, but more feminine. She/he wore a black collar with spikes.

When I had danced enough and read the clipping at the wall, I left. I learned from reading the clippings at least one interesting item. If you renew you passport after August 18, the passport will contain a chip which can be scanned from 10 meters distance and contains all kinds of data, which will include your fingerprints in the near future. Whereas, if you renew your passport before August 18, it will not yet contain the chip and the passport will be valid for another five years. That was alarming news. Scary. I am considering renewing my passport a bit early because of this.
