CD: For example, Nuyer is selfish when she leaves her children in search of a better life (Scar).
CM1: This action is selfish because Nuyer appears to be putting her own happiness in front of that of her children’s.
CM2: Leaving her family results in Nuyer’s children being forced to live with their grandmother and Aunt.
CD: For instance, Nuyer is selfless when she reurns to take care of her mother when sheis on her death bed (Scar).
CM1: This is selfless because by coming back to help someone else she has to except the scorn of everyone arond her.
CM2: Nuyer’s actions result in her making peace wiht her mother before her death, something she had not yet managed to do.
CD: For example, O-lan selflessly gives up her new born child to save her form the pain of starving to death (Scar).
CM1: This action is selflessly because O-lan is sarcaficing her child to preserve the lives of her other family members and prevent her child from slowly starving to death.
CM2: O-lan’s actions most strongly affect her child by preventing her from starving to death and also sparing food for her older children.
CD: For instance, Wang-lung is selfless when after receiving beans he chews them up and feeds them to his daughter (The Good Earth).
CM1: This is selfless because Wang-lung chooses to feed his daughter, even though he himself needs nourishment.
CM2: His daughter is deeply affected by this because she herself is starving to death and any food at all makes a large differemce.
CD: For example, Ching is selfless when he gives some of his stored food to Wang-lung as his own personal penance for stealing from Wang-lung (The Good Earth).
CM1: This is selfless because Ching himself needs the food for him and his wife, but still gives the food to Wang-lung to ensure the safety of Wang-lung’s family.
CM2: By giving up the food and sacraficing himself, Ching has given, if only a small portion, of hope to Wang-lung and O-lan’s family.
